I'm sure I'm rehashing an old subject, but I was wondering what you guys use for patch lube when its below freezing. Minnesota's ML seasons just wrapped up here on Sun. and it was a high 15 degrees yesterday. Been using Wonder Lube and killed my deer, but noticed it gets hard as a rock.

I'll second Track's Mink Oil. I haven't had a chance to use (yet) below 10 degrees F, but at that temp it's slicker than deer guts on a doorknob.

Yep...TOTW's Mink Oil. Easy to apply to the patches and the tin lasts a long long long time.

Just curious? What is wrong with using Wonder Lube? I use it in below freezing temps during hunting season (and year-round) with no ill effects.

I use my usual natural lube. For the cold weather I put my loading block of patched ball on a leather string and hang it around my neck where it will be handy, but for the bitter cold weather I tuck it inside my coat. It is still handy but the lube doesn't freeze up.

True, but the lube in the barrel will freeze up.

I too use TOW's mink oil and have used it in extremely dry cold temps to 12-degrees F ... and it still is soft and slick. Try it, for $5 a tin with twice as much in it as Natural Lube or other, you sure have nothing to lose!

Oh yeah ... I switch to Hoppe's BP Patch Lube solvent for Summer shooting, as the mink oil gets waaaaay too runny. In fact, once Summer starts to roll around, I store the mink oil in the fridge.

Why does that matter?? And please don't try to tell me that it will cause the ball to become an obstruction. I just don't buy that.....

I have found no apparent difference. Temperature has no effect on the accuracy or how any of my muzzleloaders shoot regarding lube. At around 400 degrees F when the gun is fired using Black powder the lube melts instantly. I keep the lube inside my jacket to keep it liquefied prior to shooting so that never was an issue either.

have you ever tryed Go-Jo white hand cleaner as patch lube? Works good for me at below freezing temps. I soak patches in a zip bag and carry in a tin. they stay pliable. you can use them to wipe down with also.

Click on this Link to my homemade lubes.

Three years ago I shot a deer using a patch dipped and then dried on wax paper as in the Moose Juice notes. These I carry as patched balls in a wood loading block in my hunting pouch. I reloaded after that shot no problem before I appoached the downed buck. It was 15º below zero F and I hope to never have to hunt in that temperature again. :shocked2: It was like sticking my hands in hot coals when I gutted him but after the initial burn felt soooo good.
