Lube War Phase TWO
I started a new post 'cause the LUBE WAR # 1 was getting pretty long.
I am not ready to concede the .50 or .54 T/C 1:48 twist is as accurate as a deep groove 1:60 or 66. It just so happens some dummy stacked a 6 foot pile of cord wood in front of my 50 and 75 yard range so I can only shoot at 25 'till I move the wood pile where I put it. (opppps)
So far no rust in the barrel. If time permits I'll shoot some more today.
There is a distinct shortage of of bear oil in these parts.
Lard is not a good subsitute, or so I've heard.
Wish I had some, but I haven't seen any bear in the back yard, ever. I have seen several deer in the front and back yard this year. Always a good sign.
I saw one black cat sneaking thru the woods as I just happened to be standing next to my Mossberg. The thing was only 20 yards away. And you know the rest of that story. ::

You might put out the word to any taxidermists near you, if they get a bear to mount they could save some fat for you to render down, it usually just gets tossed.

I took this 'shot' while out gopher hunting in central B.C. a few weeks ago. This is a particularly large bear for the area, and would push 400lbs. His legs were massive and belly not far from the ground. I would think he'd square around 7' as well.
; THIS one's a trophy and has been disturbin the ranchers Bees. I expect he'll collect a bullet before too long. The bees are one thing, but a Black Bear this size is also a definite threat to livestock.
He was about 200yds. away, so I used as much telephoto the camera would give. My .17Ackley Hornet wouldn't have been much of a 'stopper', if needed.
; BTW- the stump in the first photo is 4.5' tall.

I would have loved to have some bear oil, or even fat, for lube testing. It is right up there with sperm whale oil and unobtanium as far as finding it on the local grocery or drug store shelves for sale, and I have never seen a bear of any type that wasn't in a zoo, so shooting one last month for test purposes was right out. I have no doubt it was available and used centuries ago.

Hey Daryl, GREAT shots of that bear! I've heard that those big boys have ways to avoid trouble, so you never know, he could roam the range for a long while, or one lucky hunter could get the job done. Fall hunt is right around the corner, so I hope you heretell what happened.

Regards, sse

Also iffen ye hadn't piled it up so high, ye would a seen that yer bar oil is a walkin around on tuther side o it!

I'm going to shoot out #16 this morning if it quits raining. Heck I'll shoot it out even if it IS raining. This is a test right?
So far no rust!
Question. What is the mix (if you want to devluge a trade secret) of that small tin of snot you sent me? (cheapskate!)
What is the purpose of the castor oil in yer mixes? Any particular reason fer it?
Does anyone really know what makes up T/C Bore Butter for sure?
What is in Murphy's Oil Soap? What are it's chemical components?
Does anyone know what is in mineral oil? from what little research I've done, mineral oil is paint thiner.
Anyone know?
Inquiring minds don'cha'know. ::

Castor oil is a GREAT rust preventor.
: With only the castor oil residue left in my .46cu.in. engine, it was protested from rust for 4 months after losing the plane in February and found 3rd week of June. there was over 4' of snow on the ground when it burried, went through the spring thaw, spring rains, and had no rust in the bearings or even the mounting screws. There was one spot of rust on the very end of the main needle adjusting rod, about 1/8" in dia. Castor Oil is a very good rust preventitive, not just resists rust - it prevents it.

Since your gun didn't explode I decided to try some myself. :winking:

The 70 gr group was shot first and is less than I expect of myself, but that is after clearing the weeds and brambles in my shooting spot with a grass whip (for those of you youngin's it's a manual weed-eater that works like a golf club). I cleared 25 yds x 4' and started to loose steam. That's why the 30 yard group is from a kneeling position. It's been YEARS since I've tried a kneeling shot. And the mosquitoes were horrible. And the sun was in my eyes . . .

The fifth shot spoiled my second (42 gr @ 25 yds) group. I saw it go right there. Rats. The recovered patches are reusable and that's 11 shots ( I fired a 'fouler' at a can) without wiping. I lubed them as lightly as I dared - a thin, even coat that showed no 'chunks' or smears of lube.

Anyway, the mix we both used is 1 oz beeswax, 4 oz castor oil and 1 tbsp Murphy's Oil Soap. ( A ratio of 2:8:1). Iffen you'd a sent me a bigger tin you'd a got a bigger batch. As you didn't send me no tin you're lucky you didn't get no-tin in return. :)

Mineral Oil: "A mixture of liquid hydrocarbons obtained from petroleum. It is used as laxative, lubricant, ointment base, and emollient." Trouble with white mineral oils is they form a tar when burned (680
