lubing a maxi ball

what is the best way to lube the 50 cal. 370 grain maxi ball. i think there has to be a less messier way than with your fingers .
i hear the bore butter works best, i just got done casting a bunch out of pure lead i got a good deal on from a scrapper for 65 cent a pound.

i shot them in my hawkens and they shot good with t7 90 grains , so i think they will be my deer hunting load this year.

Maybe melt it and dip them? Only takes a couple spoonfuls. Melt on a pickle jar lid or other. Lay them in it, stir around to coat, and pull out with tweezers, needlenose, or hemos.

Let them dry/firm up, and you're all set.

One of the easiest methods is to stand them up in a shallow pan and pour in the lube. When it's set, use a hollow tube to punch them out, As the tube fills up, they'll come out the top and you can set them on the table top or tray. Being .50's, something with 1/2 inch I.D. should be pretty close or take the minimum of opening up.

Wes/Tex's idea is the best but let me add to his idea and tell you to wrap each lubed conical in a bit of printer paper to keep the lube from making mess out of your bag. I just wrap them and twist the ends shut so that they look like pieces of taffy. If you want to use an OP wad, you can just wad the wrapper paper up when you remove it from your bullet and push it down on top of your powder. If you don't do it that way, just put it in your bag or pocket and throw it away when you get home.

I do what West Tex said as far as melting Wonder-Lube in a shallow pan. Depending upon time of year, I often will add some Beeswax to the mix to make the lube a little less messy in the summer months.

I had a friend of mine use his drill press to drill-out the primer pocket of a .50 cal BMG spent case, so I can just twist the case into the hardened lube to extract the Maxi's. The BMG case will hold 2-3 Maxi's, then a 1/8" dowl is used to poke them out. For storage, I simply use a recycled T/C Maxi yellow plastic box already set-up to hold 20 Maxi's.....been doin' it for years!

Wes/Tex and BillnPatti is the way to go. Less mess no fuss and it works. If you use the 50 cal. Browning case just cut the base of the case off. The bullets will eventually just fall out on their own. This is the only way I do this task.

T.C. makes an adapter that screws on to their tube of bore butter. Insert maxi, squeeze tube and its done. I see them on ebay fairly regularly.

You go right on using those 7/8 oz. lead slugs, lol! Nice "thumpability" too!

Put a bit of Lee Liquid Alox in a bowl such as you would mix a cake in and swirl your projectiles around until fully but lightly coated - then stand on kitchen (baking) paper until dry. A light second coat doesn't hurt. All my maxi's shoot straight with liquid alox and it seems to handle a bit of hot weather better without melting and turning to a runny goo.

Just one way to do it...

many thanks to all, i did see one of those plastics things that screw on the tube ,on ebay looks like it will work pretty slick,

i just feel i have to add beeswax to thicken it up, the stuff seems runny.

many good ideas guys, i just could not believe how accurate the maxi-ball are.

Rather than piss off the lady of the house (Otherwise known as She Who Must Be Obeyed) and use her bowls I would suggest using butter tubs. Cheap, reusable and you can always get more. It's what I do to put Alox on modern bool-etts.

Growing a set would just make Her more bent on harvesting them... kinda like us and a buck we see in trail cams with a nice rack! :rotf:
