My take on it is that a mold that cast a slightly smaller ball then ideal could be rammed down a chamfered cylinder and never noticed until it moved forward under recoil and locked up the cylinder.

In a day when these revolvers were life saving/taking tools this would not be acceptable.

I believe they did away with the chamfer so that a man ramming down a ball would see the shaved ring of lead and feel confident that it would never move forward under recoil. Not seeing that shaved ring would tell him to go to a larger sized ball.
