Anyone have an opinion they’d be willing to share on the Lyman GPR as a whitetail rifle? Have the opportunity to snag one and it would be my first traditional black powder. First BP all together. Would this be a good choice for getting my feet wet and trying to harvest a deer with it?

What exactly are you concerned about? It being a flintlock? A roundball gun? A 54 caliber?

Folks seem to love their GPRs and take game on a regular basis without issue. Personally, currently only have one Lyman GPR. A flintlock in 54 caliber. This particular gun hasn’t taken any big game only because its number hasn’t come up. I hunt with more than one gun, and tend to pick a different gun for every hunt, though I’ve taken a number of deer with 54 caliber roundballs.

If the bore checks out good, no reason not to go for it.
