Hello! Good shooting! Iam thanking of buying,A Lyman Great Plains Rifle Kit 54cal flintlock.?can anyone tell me the size flint it takes. 3/4 or 5/8 TIA.

I have a .54 GPR flint I built from a kit. I have been using 3/4" square flints. I noticed others using the 5/8" flints. A friend of mine bought me some 5/8" flints and they do work. You have picked a kit that is rather easy and fast to build. It makes a great rifle and in a wonderful caliber. I think you'll enjoy it a lot. By the way, welcome to the forum and to the dark side of flintlocks :hatsoff: .

I have been experimenting with my Lyman and find that it likes a flint that is 1/2 inch in lenght by 3/4 inch in width. The flint at its thickest part should not exceed 1/4 inch.Mine works best with the bevel up.I have been using Rich Pierces flints, and have made a few of my own. With the above described flint I have considerably lenghtened my flint life and get good ignition.I wrap the flint in lead, but I have another lock that uses leather with good results.

Wow, this is amazing. Everyone uses various sized flints! And I must contribute to the madness by saying I have used both 3/4 and 5/8 as well to a successfuly degree, yet I did find some makes of 3/4" were a tad too big in width and scratched my barrel. That is the one reason I went to 5/8" (length and width).

Hey thanks to all. Lyman returned my call the they said the 5/8.My kit came today has two 5/8 flint with it. GOD bless all, kepamsmoken????

i only got one flint with my kit, but that was a long lasting one! hit it with a diamond file and back in business! also i use 3/4 in my GPR now, it inter changes nicely with my other rifles.
