Lyman GPR Sights

Howdy,
Been a visitor on here for quite awhile now and realize there are alot of knowledgeable folks that hangout here. Question for you guys. I would like to know if anyone has changed their sights on their GPR? The factory sights are OK but aren't real fine. Can't be fiber optic but maybe a peep or some other option that my old eyes could see better. It's a good shooter and I think could be better with a sight change.

I’ve been thinking about doing the same thing. Did it help your shooting much?

I got the Lyman Peep & front Globe sights to put on my GPR, but since I shoot my .54 flint Trade Rifle more often, I installed the sights on it instead. MUCH Better accuracy, especially if you know how to select & use the globe sight inserts.

I have the Lyman 16AML AND 37ML HUNTING SIGHTS on mine, also use the rear peep with the front bead, works well.

I made a forward mount peep with this rear sight as a base [ https://www.trackofthewolf.com/Categories/PartDetail.aspx/882/1/RS-LA ] using a file and soldered a small washer for the peep. Changed the front sight to a bead. It works fine. The tang mounted fancy shmancy ones will be better though.

The lyman sights can be improved by filing the front sight much thinner and making the rear sight just a little wider.

Yeah I believe it did. If anything I'm more consistent, which means more accurate

I went with a Pedersoli "GHOST" peep on mine.
It is 1/4 the bulk of the Lyman or Williams brick thingy.
Is adjustable for elevation and windage.
And - it looks good. I just hated the brick on my other 2 hunting guns, although it did work well.
I wound up changing all of them.
Now, anything within 100 yards is MINE.

Another option for a forward or barrel mounted peep sight is the Marble Bullseye sight. Definitely not traditional, but I have put them on some late 1800 cartridge guns and was presently surprised how well they work. Might be cleaner option than soldering a washer on to a base. Believe they come in two lengths that have elevation adjustment, and one that is fixed. If they weren’t all bright and shiny they wouldn’t be very noticeable.

That double ghost ring forward mounted really works well with older eyes, at least for me and my eyes. And at under $25 not much risk in trying.

Had no issues with the ones I installed, but I was working with ‘standard’ 3/8” dovetail slots in the barrels. Don’t believe Marbles offers a metric version, but I’m pretty sure (would have to check to confirm) that the dovetail slots on the GPR are metric and not as wide, maybe 8.5 mm (.335”)? A 3/8” sight could easily be made to fit with a little file work. I would modify the sight to fit and would NOT open up the dovetail slot in the barrel.

The GPR dovetail slots are .360. You will have to file down the sight dovetail to fit the GPR slot. As said, file the sight, NOT the barrel dovetail slot.

Exactly right.

Whenever any "fitting" needs to be done, always do the work on the least expensive part to replace. That way, if something goes wrong, replacing the part will be the lowest cost way to go.

I have one of those double ghost ring sights on order for my Lyman Deerstalker. It also has the .360 dovetail. I found a company on Ebay that sells them and will make you one with the .360 dovetail. You have to contact them to get the .360, if you order the one listed it will be a 3/8". They are Northwoods Co. in Fairmont, MN.

Ive got the same problem with the old eyes. Rear sight appears double but can see front sight and target fine.

I now have 4 of these sights mounted on older guns I have acquired that came with crap sights on them.
I absolutely love them.
