I'm a longtime center fire rifle/handgun shooter who has recently picked up a Lyman GPR .54 percussion as my first muzzle loading firearm. I've had it out to the range twice now and fired around 20 shots per range session.

Overall, I'm real happy with the rifle. However, I'm having a tough time adjusting to the stock trigger. Setting the trigger produces a suitably light pull on the front trigger but it has a _lot_ of creep. Is this common with the GPR?

I've had the trigger mechanism out of the stock but haven't tried to take it apart yet. Before I go wild with the file/stones/dremel, I'm wondering if anyone here has experience with working over one of these triggers that they'd care to share.

I too have a GPR, and posted this same question a few months ago, and the answer is yes, seems as though all GPRs have this problem, and it's because the adjustment screw is too short!

Apparently they do this now on all of their triggers for "liability" reasons. So, the answer is to get a longer adjustment screw so you can take that creep out. I have not done it yet, but will when I stop forgetting to. :shake:

They say you can get them at Dixon's.

Thanks for the answer to the problem. I'll take the stock screw to the local hardware store and try to match the thread, first. If that doesn't work, I'll try Dixons.

I wasn't happy with the stock triggers even after filing and honing the parts. At the time I did'nt know about changing the adjustment screw either. I put a set of the Davis Deerslayer triggers in mine and I really liked the way they worked. I enjoyed my GPR before, but I really liked the way these triggers looked and preformed.

Just another option. :peace:

I had a problem as well with my triggers.. I just recently replaced the triggers.. I am wanting to sell my GPR soon, and want it to shooting properly... what mine was doing... when I set the set trigger, and pulled the front trigger it would click once, the gun not going off, and then I had to pull it way back before it would shoot..The new triggers seemed to do the trick.. Hubby has a GPR, he has the trigger set fairly light and hasnt had a bit of trouble with his... They are both great guns otherwise.

I think it's a metric screw, so watch the tread size.

When I went shopping for a longer screw, I just took the trigger plate to the hardware store and made sure the screw would fit.

followup...

Plan A: find longer screw locally
Plan B: order screw from Dixons
Plan C: replacement trigger group as suggested by Flatlander

Crashed and burned on finding that small of a metric screw locally. I'm currently at plan B, awaiting a screw from Dixons. The guy who answered the phone there was very good natured about dropping a couple in an envelope at 50 cents apiece.

I appreciate the help ya'll provided.

In addition to a longer screw which I was able to find at Tru-Value hardware store I also picked up a nut to lock my adjustment in place. Without the locknut, it seemed to me the screw was easy to move about which might cause you to loose your setting. With the locknut, I'm able to lock my setting in place and trust that it will remain so. Currently, I have no creep and the setting is just perfect. :imo:
