Hi folks. I picked up a Lyman Great Plains .54 for $200 recently. The bore is fairly rough due to poor cleaning at some point in its life. I thought I could probably clean it up enough so that it would shoot decent, and it does. Not great, but decent. I have considered having it bored to a .56 smooth bore. Considering the 15/16 barrel, can the .54 be re-bored to anything larger if I wanted to rifle it? Didn't know if there was enough meat on the bone to do anything else! Thanks in advance....

bobby hoyt is a barrel smith supreme Robert Hoyt at the Freischutz Shop, 700 Fairfield Station Rd., Fairfield, Pa. 17320. His phone # 717-642-6696 he did a lyman tradegun barrel for me to 57 cal smoothbore.

Might check on the price of a new barrel from Lyman,, just a thought. Shorter turnaround!!
If you payed $200.00 for it you still have money to "invest"

I had a Green Mountain 15/16 .40 cal rebored by Mr Hoyt to .54 cal. and it came out OK but I don't think it could go any larger as their is just a tiny bit of a shoulder where the breach plug seats now. If you go any larger there will be no shoulder for the plug to seat on. Best to write Mr. Hoyt and ask - WRITE him don't try calling -- he is a busy man and does not like to answer phones while working :v .

I noticed last tight Track has barrel liners for muzzleloaders with bad barrelz. I think they come in 45, 50, and 54 calibers. They are priced by the inch. Maybe relining the barrel would be an option.

I see a lot here think of only the next common cal. you have a .54 why not fresh it out to .55 or .56 ? that is the way it was don in to old days.

they also had to get a new mould made every time. custom moulds can get a bit spendy addin' to the already rather significant cash outlay of havin' the re-bore done.

Bobby Hoyt turned a Lyman barrel into a 24 ga?

When I asked about turning a 15/16" Lyman barrel into a 24 ga I was told it was likely too large for it.

The diameter of a 24 gauge ball is 0.578"

The diameter of a 28 gauge ball is 0.549"

Most likely the barrel was bored to a 28 gauge to use 0.530" or 0.535" balls.

Depending on the depth of the mounting screws for the sights, a 24 gauge may be taking too much metal from the barrel walls for safety. A 15/16" barrel does have an upper limit to enlarge the bore. Better to insert a liner.

anyone considerin' just shippin' their barrel without callin' first take note, Robert Hoyt is still in Fairfield PA and the phone# is still the same. but he has moved & the 700 Fairfield Station Road part is no longer correct. I can't find the piece of paper I have the new address wrote down on but it's scattered about here on the site if ya look.

I just used Bob Hoyt to rebore a TC PA Hunter to .54 cal. He did an excellent job and I can't wait to shoot it. Here's the contact info I used:
