Can anyone tell me if there is a Lyman serial number listing anywhere to make sure this rifle really is a Lyman Plains (not Great Plains) Rifle ? Serial number is 006571
Thank You

Nope, but,
The Lyman Plains has an elaborate brass patch box installed where as the Great Plains has none.
I'm not real sure but I think the Plains has just one wedge where the Great Plains has two

Hard to mistake one for the other, with all that brass the Plains sports. Not to mention, unless scrubbed, the barrel is stamped Plains Rifle or Great Plains Rifle respectively.

Well, I went to the source and this is what I got back:

Me:
How does one find out when their rifle was manufactured? I bought one in kit form back in 1982.

Lyman staff:
If it was bought in 1982, it was likely made that year. The Great Plains rifle was first cataloged in 1979, so your rifle is a very early model. Through the years, we have not keep large numbers of kits in our inventory, so they usually go it within months of their manufacture date.

Me:
No, it does not, as I know of others who are interested in dating their Great Plains Rifles, both kit and finished rifles. Is there a code in the serial number? Or a record of what year a serial number may belong to?

Lyman staff:
We have limited records for serial number ranges that could give a rough date for newer rifles, but not going back this far. There is no code for dates in the numbers.

And there you have it.

Apparently they are not familiar with the fact that all Italian made guns (including kits) are proofed in Italy.

The best answer after saying they don't keep records of the serial numbers is,

"Go to the Muzzleloading Forum. They have a place that shows how the Italian proof marks are dated.

It uses a small square or rectangular box that is stamped next to the proof mark. In it are some letters or Roman numberals that can be found in the list shown on the MLF site."

Then the person could come here and ask the question and someone else would say

"Follow this link."
