Lyman Trade Rifle replacement barrel

Hi all, this is my first post here. Was thinking about getting a slower twist barrel for my Lyman Trade Rifle. I see that Green Mountain Rifle barrels sell a 32" 15/16 barrel. Do they slip right in my stock and hooked breech or do they need modification to match up for my barrel wedge location? Thanks and what a GREAT FORUM!!

I asked the same a while ago at the Log Cabin Shop, Lodi/OH. They told me a few modifications are needed to make these barrels fit.

Can't really help with your question, but are you not getting good accuracy with round balls? My Trade rifle is an excellent round ball shooter, I can't imagine swapping the barrel on mine!

My son and I own two of them......

Both can cut a playing card in half at 25 yards with a PRB or a 370 grain T/C Maxi-Ball!

Before you spend money that you'll only notice if you bench the rifle, why don't you try my custom load that has found the "sweet-spot": 72 grains of 3Fg Goex, .018 pillow-ticking patch and a .490 Hornady ball. This load produced a score of 50x50-2X off-hand at 50 yards for me and I used my stock Trade Rifle.

Got a .40cal drop-in for a Lymans Great Plains from Ed Rayl in Gassaway, WV.
I was guided to him by the recommendations of others in muzzleloading. He provided a truly made to order barrel, excellent workmanship, high quality and a reasonable price.

I'm shooting a .54 and my current load is 80 grns of 2f Goexx with .530 RB and .018 patch. 50yrds was decent being 1 1/2"but it opened up to 4" at 75yds. The gun is new with almost 100 shots through her. I'm still working on gettin her dialed in. Shooting has been off the bench using sand shooting bags. I like shooting PRB and not the conicals. Just think that me and my gun should be able to do better than 4" at 75-100 yards. Just keeping the slow twist barrel on the back burner as an option. Any advice on pet loads would be great. Thanks

I know the rifle is new, but I'm just wondering if you could use .020 patches?

Another thought: Punch up the charge to 90 grains of 2F, and use a pre-lubed .54 cal wonder-wad underneath the PRB combo that you're using now. The extra 10 grains will get the ball out to the 100 yard target just a little quicker so wind will have less time to affect the ball. The wonder-wad will give you a little more lube to soften the fouling even more, as well as lower the SDV, thereby tightening the groups. And the wad will also help protect the .018 patches while you're still breaking-in the rifle :wink:

On any given day, heat, cold, humidity, wind, caffeine, changing sunlight on your sights all work to open-up your groups. Take notes as to the behavior of your rifle under different circumstances, and learn to make adjustments with good ol' Kentucky Windage & Elevation.

Most rifles can shoot better than their owners! I know mine do! How else could I cut playing cards in half!
