It's been years since I shot one of these. My Dad used to have one which I hunted with a time or two. For years, I thought I'd like to get one for old times sake if one ever came up for sale. Anyone out there still shoot one? What's been your experience with them compared to the Great Plains? I know they're lighter than the GP and have a single trigger.

The Lyman Trade Rifle is the same rifle as the Investarms Hawken, minus the patch box and with a simple non-adjustable sight, versus the modern screw adjustable rear sight. I have one in .54, and like it a lot. I prefer the "primitive" sight of the Trade Rifle, and the single trigger for hunting. First time out, brand new out of the box, mine shot 11 shots without cleaning into a 2" group, 1" above the Bulls-eye at 70 yards. Perfect. Load was 60 grains of Swiss 3f, a .490 rb, and .015 patch. Never messed with anything else in it. The Great Plains rifle is fine also and more true to originals if that is your goal.

I hunted 14 +/- years with a .50 calibre CVA Mountain Rifle, my Dad’s firearm of choice was a .54 calibre Lyman Trade Rifle.

The Trade Rifle is lighter than the Lyman GPR, and more nimble to use in dark heavy timber. The gun is bulkier and blockier than the CVA Mountain Rifle and the TC Hawken. The .54 calibre is great elk medicine, that Trade Rifle harvested many deer and elk over the years.

I still have my CVA, and he still has his Trade Rifle. My current hunting rifle is a custom .54 calibre 1820’s styled fullstock plains/mountain flintlock rifle. Dad shoots a custom .54 calibre flintlock styled after the U.S. Contract Rifle.

I have a Lyman Trade rifle in 50 caliber in 1:48 twist that has the rear peep and globe front sight set up. It also came with a non-adjustable rear sight. At some point, I intend on installing the rear sight so now I'm on the hunt for a regular blade front sight to replace the globe. Overall, I like the rifle and intend on working up a load for maxi balls and/or Hornday Great Plains bullets. If you decide to buy a used one, check it out really good before you lay the money down. Good luck to you!
