As I wait for my Hawken gun to be built I am wondering if I "need" a pistol to go with it. For those who have or had the Lyman, would you recommend it?
Are there any caveats that I need to be aware of?
Also how do you carry it loaded without worry of blowing the bottom half of your body off?
Iv'e got plenty of revolving pistols and have always trusted empty chambers or retaining pins and notches.
Of all the guns I have had over the years I can't ever remember even handling this type of pistol.

1. Of course you do! What kind of question is that? :rotf:

"For those who have or had the Lyman, would you recommend it?"

2. Absolutely. I have one in .54 caliber to go along with my .54 cal GPR. Mine was put together from a kit, Poorly I might add, but it is really accurate and a joy to shoot. Hopfully I can get around to making it look as good as it shoots in the near future.

3. Probably would be best to not put a cap on it until you are ready to fire but I have used a brass nipple cover and rested the hammer on that. I don't really carry it too much though.

If you get one I will go out on a limb and say that you will not regret your purchase. And if you get a .50 cal and end up not liking it for some reason PM me and I'll buy it from you!

Schutzenkette

Have one if .50 Cal. I have it shooting half decent?? The Trigger on mine is more of a two stage military pull. Suppose there are ways to smooth it out?? Leatherman make a nice Holster for the Plains Pistol. Better than the Belt Hook system.Get one and have fun with it.....

It gets my recommendation. Good pistol for a good price. Last I checked Midsouth had the best price.

I have one in .54 too and agree with Schutzenkette that is is a good shooter. Mine has won several pistol matches for me. The trigger on mine is pretty good right out of the box.

The belt hook proved to be more of an annoyance than a help to me so I took it back off. When I carry it I just stuff it in the front of my belt crossdraw style so the muzzle points down and out from my leg and body. At rendezvous and shoots it is not loaded or capped until ready to fire. When I have carried it hunting it is loaded and capped with the hammer on half-cock but I do not feel like I am in much danger of being hit in the event of an accidental discharge because the muzzle clears my body. I do take care when carrying it that way tho...

The grip will take some getting used to as it is lots different than shooting any revolver I ever shot. Once you get that figgered out you'll like the pistol.

Built mine from a kit in the early 80's to go with the GPR I built. Both are .54. A great companion for the rifle.

Yep, like was said you "need one." Just because...

I have one in 50 and she's been a fine shooter without giving me any problems. Dependable and fun to shoot.

So... get one.
