As some of you know, I bought a used Lyman GPR a few weeks ago.
The gun is in great shape, except someone had lost the fly.

For those who are new to this sport, the fly is a part of the lock that allows the "set triggers" to work, and, yes, it's about the size of a half grown housefly. In other words, it's little!! :shocking:

Anyway, I didn't know it was missing, but during my first outing, the gun (its a caplock) had several missfires, with the cap not firing. It turns out, this was because of the missing fly.

I got on the Muzzleloading Forum site and, using a link to Lyman (who makes the Great Plains Rifle) I ordered a new fly.
That was last Sunday night.
There in the mail today was a nice package from Lyman with my new fly! That makes a 4 1/2 day delivery which I think is great . :applause: :front:

I like to give credit where it's due, and in my book, they've earned it.
:) :)

Well I guess I'm spoiled cause I can jump in to my car and be at Dixon's in 25 minutes. 4 day's seems so long ::
Just think, you place the order, they get your order, send your order to the warehouse, some one picks the order,it gets packed and stamped for postage, goes to post office and shows up at your house in 4 days, that pretty good:thumbsup:

It kinda boggles the brain, Ah says!
All the way from Middlefield Conn, wharever that is!! Must be closer than tha far field, but further than the close one. ::
At must be at least 1500 miles frum Phoenix!
Letts see, 1500 miles divided by 15 miles a day iffen ye gots a good ox team a pullin yer waggon...at makes fer 100 days or 3 months an 10 days, give or take a few, an that's iffen yer lucky an tha creek don't rise! ::

For the Lyman gun owners that want to replace the fly, I have a few tips:
The bridle is held in place with three screws. Two little ones at the top, and a big one at the back that also serves as the sear pivot.
With the hammer all the way down, remove the two little screws, and back the one holding the sear out about two and a half turns.
Then lift the bridle plate up so it disengages from the tumbler and rotate it upward, pivioting around the sear screw.
This exposes the tumbler and the old fly (if it is still there). ::
Put in the new fly, return the bridle to its former position. Replace and retighten the two top screws. Lightly tighten the sear screw, making sure you can still move it against the spring pressure, and the spring returns it to its rightful place against the tumbler.

Try cocking the lock to the full cock position. The fly should get out of the way, allowing the sear nose to click into the full cock notch.
I mention this because my new fly was about .005 too long, and wouldn't let the sear enter the full cock notch.

If this happens, remove the fly and stone off the end, just a little. That fixed it on my gun. It might take a couple of stonings to get yours to work reliably. Just don't remove too much material or you'll be ordering another fly.

Happy Shooting! :) :)

You are fortunate. If I were that close to Dixon's, I would view it differently, I could always just jump in the car and be home in twenty-five minutes. :haha:

Actually the Postal Service picks up packages now, so you don't have to go to the post office. I don't know how much they charge for the service. :hatsoff:

Now that I think about it I was looking at that in the wrong direction.
