The weather was nice and the wife was out today so it was play time.

I had this section of barrel from a rifle I cut down for a friend.

A little forging

My first forge weld I set a chunk of broken file into the blade.

More Forging

rough ground still a lot of filing, polishing and heat treating but that it for today.

Nice looking hawk head. How long was the beginning section of barrel and finished head?

She started out 6 inches and ended up 8 inches long but I trimmed the front a bit to get a nice edge. The barrel was a 7/8 inch 50 cal. I'd like to find a 1 inch or larger for the next one.

That is simply amazing! To turn a chunk of steel into a working instrument to quite a bit of skill and you have got it.

Real nice! I was worried at the one pic as it looked like the blade of the hawk had turned too much but, the finish product looks like you nailed it!!

As nice as it is the poll is longer than my tastes prefer. IMHO, you could have used the same hunk of barrle, make the poll smaller and by layering have plenty of stock to work with for a larger hawk. This from me who ain't never forged nutting.

Good idea The bowl is a little small also. I think on the next one I'll make a drift and open it up a little more so you can get more tobacco into it.
