I primarily hunt with a bow but harvested my first deer with a PRB about 7:00AM this morning. Not much of a challenge markmanship wise as the shot was 16yds. Ran about 25yds before going down and left a good blood trail. Had been concerned about my load, 70gr GOEX 3f and a .495 ball being kinda anemic compared to the 110gr 2f and 430gr conical I used in my .54 Renegade back in the 70's. Had her skinned, quartered and in the cooler before 9:00am, but I'm only hunting 300yds from the house.

Congratulations Les, Post pics if you got em, of the deer and gun not your truck. Have you ever seen the "halo" of deer hair where you shot the deer. Pretty neat stuff that a friend put me on to couple of years ago. Here's looking forward to the next one.

Congratulations. Way to go.

Our Missouri season opens this Saturday morning. This will be my first blackpowder hunt. My 14 year old son and I almost can't sleep we are so excited. Your story just gets me wound up all the more.

Thanks for sharing with us.

Ain't nuthin' wrong with 70gr of 3f and a .495 PRB.That's what I use on deer, bear and hogs and never need more! As we all know,it all boils down to "Shot Placement" :winking:.

Nothing wrong with a 70 grain 3f load under a 495. I shoot that as my hunting and target load in almost every 50 rifle I have. Last big deer was at 60 yards quartering away and I put a ball thru from the back of the ribcage out at the front leg on the other side. That deer was well over 200 pounds, and the gun has a 24 inch carbine length barrel. Unless you plan on trying long range shots, the load you are using is fine for most purposes. Just put it where it belongs and mark the last place you saw the deer well before you move so you can pick up the trail.

congratulations of taking a nice deer. Never under estimate that load your using. It is a deer killer...

I have taken several deer with 75 grs.3f with a .490 rb. 15th patch and that is all you need out to 125 yds. I can see you now, hooked like the rest of us. WAY TO GO.
