I saved a couple bones from last years deer harvest for the purpose of making my own powder measure. After finally confirming that my smoothie really likes a 3 dram charge the other day, it was time to make one. I like it, I need to darken the rawhide more I think but it's ready for use now.

Is the closed end at a joint. You did not mention closing one end so I assumed that it must be closed naturally.

No, I artificially closed it. :haha: I forgot I'm pretty sure it's a front leg bone. I think I cut it just above the joint then 4" above that. Put it through a boil and cleaned it up. The taper at the top is natural, the only thing I've done to this bone is clean it out, a peroxide bath and scraped the outside clean.

What I did was carefully trim a .12 ga fiber wad and used a small wood dowel to push the wad in from the top to a point I thought was close. Then slowly poured a measured charge to see which way the wad needed to go. Once I got the wad were it needed to be for 82 grains of 2F, I mixed up some 5 minute epoxy and dribbled a little bit to cover the wads surface. Turned it over and did the same on the other end. The epoxy made a nice clear surface on top of the wad. It throws 82 grains.

 I'll have to send you up some braintanned leather lace so you can do away with the red :blah:

great looking measure. once you start using deer legs you will be hooked. they are my favorite for knife handles.

I`ve thought of trying this with a piece of elk antler..I may give it a shot..

As clumsy as I am I still need a small funnel.

It actually pours pretty nice Rick. This was made for my .12ga but I could use it no problem with my .54 I'm sure. I have another waiting to be made up and will definitely make it for my .58 once I know the charge for that.

I'll have to collect a few more this year.

I love how it looks like it was made "In the field". Totally cool.

Yep, that was the idea Scouter.
