With the high cost of #11 percussion caps I came across
a tool in the MidSouth catalog to make #11 caps using
aluminum pop or beer cans then using caps used in childrens
cap guns,tool sells for about 18.00 $ ???

I tryed that myself many years ago & didn't have very good luck with it. Could have just been the way I was doing it tho' & may work fine for you. Tap-a-cap I think was what I had.

They work, but.......

Childrens roll caps, if you can still find them, are no where near as hot as a normal number 11 cap. They produce lots of paper debris that clogs up nipples making using a pick on every shot a need. If you hunt around you can find plastic caps made for toy guns that will fit a number 11 nipple already that are basically the same thing you will be making. They used to come 144 on a card for about 79 cents. We used to use them for target use with the nipples bored out a little. The one real cure for the price of caps is a flintlock, and even flints are not cheap!

The $18.00 price is good compared to $30.00 from Dixie and some other sources.I was always going to give them a try,but never felt I could afford the outlay if it didn't work.Someone said they were useing two caps to increase the fire.I havn't heard anyone here doing a lot of bragging about how "well" Tap-O-Cap worked for them.I'm into flinters now so won't bother getting one.I did gather up 8 or 10 boxes of caps.Guess I'll give them to the grandkids.

If yuou use a nipple with the hole drilled out a little, they do ok in perfect conditions. They are not what you would want out in the woods when it counts.

Plus those toy caps seem more corrosive than even the old CVA type caps used to be. I have one and as stated above I used two caps per cap (so to speak) and always had trouble with the paper. If I shot one evening and did not clean till next morning the nipple would already be coated in rust. I do not recommend these, not counting the time you invest...
