I picked up a nice wool blanket last weekend for about $2 at a rummage sale. (Sorry, I checked and there was only the one). I'd like to make it into a case for my new musket, but can't find anything on the WWW on how to do so. What should I sew with, what type of needle, and how do I do the stitching?

Lastly, what can I make with the remaining approximate half blanket?

First off, use a large rug or blanket needle and the whip stitch or a blanket stitch, you can sew it with black wool yarn, it works fine...

As for how to make the blanket case, it's easy...

The case should be long enough to cover the entire gun and fold back over the stock so you can tie it shut. It should be tapered (small at muzzle, large at butt). It shouldn't have fringe unless you're portraying very late 19th c. Sew it inside out and then turn it. I'd use linen thread and a running stitch. These instructions are only if you wish it to be authentic in construction and design. Since the stiching will be inside, sew it on a machine if you wish.

That would be another way to do it, I'm sure there are several more ways too...

Not word one of being "authentic" was ever mentioned until you brought it up young feller, and I reckon your use of one of them new fangled sewing contraptions would earn your contrabution the most authentic award, if there be such a thing. I'm guessing the judges won't look inside the case at the stitching used, bottom line, there is more than one way to skin a cat.

No no, Jed.
I want to make it from a blanket, not a cat skin. I'm allergic to cats, so that'd be a bad idea. And the cat needed to cover a Bess is a cat I don't want to muck about with!

Another gun case perhaps. Or a shoulder bag to carry your stuff while on a shopping trip at Rondevous.

Those are very nice illustrations Musketman posted. I just received two gun cases from Northwest Traders (my wife ordered me for our 20th anniversary) and you might check Paul's website out for examples and ideas. One is made from a Witney blanket, the other from leather and interior is lined with wool - really nice! Both fold over and tie off to afford complete coverage of the rifle.

If you have a normal size blanket you should get more than 1 case from it. I just bought one of the Italian ,brown with the grey stipe, wool blankets for $7.50 and got 5 rifle cases (long ones) and 4 pistol cases.

Yea, that's not important as long as it's pretty. Some lace around the opening would really set it off. :winking:

My wife had a old wool blanket

and said "I can make one of them"

This was her finished product, works

real good with the draw string. I dont

know if the check pattern is PC but

its functional...
