I agree on using a hammer stone rather than a steel hammer. A granite river rock seems to work for me. Leather gloves and safety glasses too so you don’t lose an eye or bloody a finger.
Figured once I had a knappable piece I’d go to the hammer stone. But, thanks, once it’s cooled, I’ll give it a try.I’ve had better luck with a hammer stone than with a steel hammer.
Buckskinquin, do you have a picture of that chert you are heat treating that you could post.
seeing it may give some of us an idea of where you need to hit to spall it.
most Ohio valley chert doesn't really need heat treating.

My word you poor guys across the pond we have flint almost every where in uk where there’s chalk just pick it up. Wife steals it for her flower pots I enjoy napping very much and started on arrow heads.Buckskinquin, do you have a picture of that chert you are heat treating that you could post.
