I know I've seen here before, how to make paper cartridges for a musket. But now, I can't find it at all.
How do I make cartridges (with ball) for my Brown Bess. Or, please provide a link to an old topic or another web site. Thanks!

Cig. papers will work. If you have a Dixie catalog go to the back for instructions. The Dixie catalog is the best value for ML info you can get.

Not sure how to blow these up and make them readable

Good morning
+1 on the Dixie catalog ! I cannot remember when there was not one around the house. I have one down here in Peru with me. There are 100´s great ideas tucked away here and there.

Sorry, way too small to read, and when blown up they were too fuzzy to read. Can you email the full size documents?

Pick up a copy of Sketch book 1776. Lots of good stuff in there for shooting and etc.

If anyone needs a good copy of the scans, send me a PM with your regular email address and I'll send the scans to you.

Can't stand trying to size stuff correctly in PhotoBucket!

Thanx Everybody. I'm enjoying the Company - have kept to myself for many Moons - good to just sit around the fire with some Kindreds. Nice how quickly and sincerely everybody responds. Hopefully I can be of some help myself once in a while...

I would be interested in them.

Also would like to see how to make an actual cartridge loaded with a ball.

I'll send instruction scans to your regular email account so that I can attach jpeg images. I haven't had good luck with getting the size right when I attach them to posts on this forum.

Send me your regular email address by PT and I'll be happy to help out.

Thank you for posting those instructions. So many cartridge making instuctions don't include a roundball.

These are my phot instructions for making a paper cartridge. Use newsprint for the paper. you want the paper to be somewhat strong but not as strong as computer paper. I will dip the ball and paper end in a mix of bee's wax and olive oil, one part bee's wax to 5 or 6 parts of olive oil. The ratio can be from one part wax to to 3 to 7 parts of oil. It just depends on time of year and how thick you want the lubricant to be. Glueing the paper is optional, but I like the integrity of a tube that is held together by glue. You can tie a thread around the ball to hole it in place. You can also fold or twist the cartridge to finish the job. For a Bess, the dowel is a standard 3/4" rod. For a 20 gauge, the dowel is 5/8" in diameter. It is worth taking a few minutes to turn the rod down so that when paper is wrapped aroung the dowell, the paper cartridge is a slip fit in the bore. The turning can be as simple as using sandpaper to remove the excess wood.
