I use a double boiler arrangement when melting fat down. This protects the fat from getting so hot it begins to burn! Just put a frying pan or cake pan with a half inch of water in it, and then place another pan, in which you put the fat, inside the smaller one in the water. The water boils at 212 degrees F., way below the ignition temperature of fat and oil.

I strain the oil the first time through an old Cotton/synthetic T-shirt, that has been washed and dried so its free of lint. This removes most of the solids, fur, and debris in the fat that gets in the oil. To purify it further, I tried using coffee filters placed in a strainer, over a large stainless steel pot, so that the oil would slowly seep through the filters and end up on the pan. I got much more OIL out of the mix, and it was as clear- to my total surprise-- as that shown in the pictures above. You will get solids, but they sink to the bottom of your jars, particularly if you refrigerated the jars. Then its just pouring off the oil on top into a separate bottle to get all the oil you might want or need.

The Solids do make a good lubricant, or boot seal, as mentioned. You can mix the solids with olive( Or Elk, or bear) oil to make a more soft patch lube, using the fat solids in lieu of Beeswax.

Let us all know how much oil you get.

I've rendered deer simply by boiling it. Let it cool in the frig and you can literally remove the rendered deer fat disc from the rest of the solution. The solids from the soup will also sink to the bottom.

Yep, just scrap off the junk from the bottom of the disc. Thats how I do it.

Thanks for the help
I have some free time over toomorrow so i will go ahead and try to rendeer my fat and let you know what happends. It looks like i get two products lard and oil i, what will the main use of the oil bee, too prevent rust, patch lube or other ?

I'm not sure about Moose, never had any fat from one to play with but I suspect it would be hard like regular whitetail deer around here. I may very well be wrong about that, just not sure. But if it is like deer fat, it will render to a hard kinda oily cake. There should be no oil whatsever. This cake is still very usable though. After taking the cake of rendered fat out of the pan and scraping the junk off the bottom, it is still very usable. Some use it as is or you can experiment mixing with things like olive oil ect to soften it to your likeing.

I myself have a mix of bear oil/ deer tallow that works great for me. I suspect your going to end up with the same as deer tallow, I just don't know. If so like I said you can substatute the bear oil with olive oil if theres no bear oil around.

Also a trick I found is to run the fat through a grinder before rendering it, it will render in 1/4 of the time it takes it for cut cubes dropped in the boiler to render.

Heres how I make my patch lube, like I said you can substitute the bear oil. Works great for a hunting lube fore me.

Today i vent along and renderd my fat, first i cut it up in small pieces and put them in a double boiler, took forever. Then i poured it through a strain into a jar, got about 2cm of clear liquid. Was about to throw the remains but thought they looked likt there were more fat in them so i put them in a fryingpan on low heat and got 2cm more in another jar. After some time in the fridge it had setteld to a firm white cake, everything solidified so there were no oil

Trust me Math, do yourself a huge favor and run it through a grinder first next time. You won't believe how fast it will render.
