I use a double boiler arrangement when melting fat down. This protects the fat from getting so hot it begins to burn! Just put a frying pan or cake pan with a half inch of water in it, and then place another pan, in which you put the fat, inside the smaller one in the water. The water boils at 212 degrees F., way below the ignition temperature of fat and oil.
I strain the oil the first time through an old Cotton/synthetic T-shirt, that has been washed and dried so its free of lint. This removes most of the solids, fur, and debris in the fat that gets in the oil. To purify it further, I tried using coffee filters placed in a strainer, over a large stainless steel pot, so that the oil would slowly seep through the filters and end up on the pan. I got much more OIL out of the mix, and it was as clear- to my total surprise-- as that shown in the pictures above. You will get solids, but they sink to the bottom of your jars, particularly if you refrigerated the jars. Then its just pouring off the oil on top into a separate bottle to get all the oil you might want or need.
The Solids do make a good lubricant, or boot seal, as mentioned. You can mix the solids with olive( Or Elk, or bear) oil to make a more soft patch lube, using the fat solids in lieu of Beeswax.
Let us all know how much oil you get.
