Making Smoke at Squirrels

My son and I planned a trip to the Ozarks for a camping / squirrel hunting excursion, but with petrol prices as they are we settled on southern Kentucky last week. My, the trees grow tall on them hills in the Daniel Boone Nat'l Forest. The canopy was full and kept the woods dark, even on the sunny days. The T/C Cherokee in .32 accompanied me:

I couldn't connect a PRB to one of the little grey squirrels no matter how hard I tried. They were difficult for my man/boy's 12 gauge, too, by staying way up in those tall oaks. Spring squirrels just don't sit still much, and they are stealthy to boot. I am out of practice far more than I thought I would be, but we still had much fun together. My son did great with the scoped rimfire, which I finally succumbed to using at the last to help fill the game bag.

Glad to say my homemade percussion caps popped superbly without one hiccup. The pieced together ramrod held up flawlessly, as well. This was a good test of my components.

I may have to try it out this Fall to redeem my shooting skills.

We did the same thing when Antelope Hunting…but we tried to tag out early to hunt rabbits…

I love hunting squirrels with my sons and my 12 gauge Richards. Need a good method for tightening up the pattern though

That's the bad thing about hunting squirrels this time of year, they never sit still and the cover is thick! I almost always use my smoothbore with shot until they start cutting nuts and slow down a little. Glad you got out anyway, especially with your son!

Come on August 15th! I always hunt with my 32 rifle and early season can be tough with all of the canopy but I usually get a couple each trip which is enough for me. I imagine if I had a smoothbore I would get a few more each year but have just never got that itch yet.
