I want to make my own lock plate, I will use all the other parts from another lock, I have the old plate to use as a guide, BUTTTT now the question; how do you go about cutting that slot for the sear spring?

what tool would you use?

Thanks

I used concrete nails to make some small chisels and scraper tools to get into tight places. That will cut steel just fine............not always on purpose either!

That would be a cheap way to make a small graver just to cut that slot with.

Dremel tools are great, I can screw something up in a fraction of the time it used to take me and leaves me with plenty of time to start completely over. :rotf:

You're right, which is why i've replaced a bunch more parts than I'd care to admit, and why i only use the dremel to polish things, and even then, with a very wary eye.

One guy's free opinion, and no doubt worth twice the price. Mileage may vary.

I don't have much use for dremels. It's the inaccuracy that bothers me. You just can't hold them exactly where you wish. they are good for some stuff that doesn't require accuracy. A graver is the most accurate tool there is. It will do anything the eye can see.

if you have a drill press use it with a milling cutter of the size you need for the slot with a drill press vice also you can get one of the dremmel tool drill press set up of e-bay for 10-20 bucks I got one of there router tool set ups for doing wooden patch boxes work grate or get dentist bits that fits the drimmel tool to do the cut a better tool would be the nsk high speed tool with a medal cutter bit easer to controll then dremmel tool

if you are doing this to make a certin size lock plate to replace a broken lock plate Jim Chambers sells a lock set up with a plate that can be cut to size to fit
