I used a rather heavy (1 lb.) rubber mallet... and have never been unhappy with it's ability to softly pound a patched ball into place when I mis-judge how dirty the barrel has become.
Normally, a few light "taps" of the rubber mallet and the short-starter slips the patched ball down into the barrel (.50 caliber) to the full length of the dowel on the short-starter.
If you "wipe" after EVERY shot, you can use a very light mallet. However, if you're like me and shoot 20 shots or so between a light spit patch cleaning, then the 1 lb mallet is the one I'd recommend you get.
