Hello, Forum

I'm new to this forum, so kindly be forgiving of any errors I may present to you.

I am trying to find some info on an old MANTON percussion cap, muzzle-loading, double barreled shotgun that was left to me by my step-father.

As the gun is in Indiana and I am in Florida, info that I do have is extremely limited right now. What I do know is that which is above AND the word "MANTON" is engraved in metal on both sides of the gun.

Which areas/parts of the gun should be noted to find serial numbers, model name (if one exists), etc?

Thank you, forum, for ANY info that can be supplied.

Welcome.

Manton is a quality British double. The family made (makes?) flintlocks on up to modern, and refined the sidelock continually. I recommend you post your querry on the smoothbore forum here. Squire Robin (our man in England) is a good scource for info.

As in most things, it depends upon condition, scarcity and original quality.

Tha gun may or may not have serial numbers.

shades,
Welcome to the MLF glad to have you with us.
Lots of great folks and information here. As Stumpy
has suggested post your question at the "Smoothbore"
forum and i'm sure you will get the information that
you need, and will hang around after you do. This is
a good place to be if it has anything to do with
traditional b/p subjects.
again welcome and i hope you will stay active

Shades, welcome to the forum. You might want to post your question in the smoothbore forum. You'll get better responses that way. Gary

After flint the sought after pieces have oddball early percussion mechanisms and best if you have John or Joseph engraved before the Manton part of the name.

The family carried on making guns simply marked "Manton" for years. Perfectly serviceable guns but the spark wasn't there. Watch out for the distinctive Manton trigger bow, always looks like the guns been dropped to my eye. Even so they do cost more than comparable guns, this 13 gauge, "Manton" single, with broken tang and ready crummy replacement under-rib still cost me around $325

best regards

Squire Robin

Not sure what happened to the above post, doesnt seem to be an EDIT button with this format.
Anyway, There are Mantons and Mantons ranging from the Dogs Bo$$ocks by Joe and his son John to Belguim copies with the name on and thats it. Price wise you could be talking about anything from around £5000 to £500 depending on what it is. If you get a real Manton in your hands it will be a work of great beauty. Any chance of some pics.

We lost a lot of post and half of the words to some replies when we moved to the new forum...

The "edit" button has a time limit on it for members to fix what they say, once that time has expired, only the section's moderator and Claude can edit the text...

I believe it is set aroung :15 minutes...

Thats pretty good, if I could put some of the mistakes I've made in my life right within 15 minutes I would'nt be where I am today. Would'nt it be good if there was a Snowpake (correction fluid) I think you call it, for lifes little mistakes.
