here you can see the cast i put in there

115390.jpg

you can see where this stock has more then an inch of drop over my T/C stock to where i have to bend the tang

112668.jpg

tang is bent and fitted

115397.jpg

the trigger is done along with the guard

115410.jpg

115404.jpg

115406.jpg

the nose cap is done also

115393.jpg

well here it is with all the inletting done....just have to sand and stain now

123333.jpg

123336.jpg

so far i'm at the point where i have two coats of red mahogany stain on the stock right now....just waiting for it to dry overnight so i can sand it to see if i want to put the third coat on

125243.jpg

then depending on how the stain comes out after the second coat will let me know if it needs more stain or start to oil it to finish it....then i will be reblueing the barrel and tang to give it a gray look to it instead of the dark blue black....then the brass will be getting a patina to give it a dull blotchy brown to it so it does not shine....since i will be useing this rifle for hunting....will have more pics following up after this will be done............................bob

So, Bob...

What are your plans for the factory stock?

That would give you a reason to buy a barrel and hardware, to make another rifle... :winking: ::

"No need to have an empty stock laying around."

boy your good musket ya read my mind....was thinking of getting a caplock and hardware from T/C so i have there lifetime warranty....called them allready to find out about reblueing my barrel to find out if that will void it....they said as long as i don't drill the barrel for any reason it will be covered....................bob

Looking good bob
I am going on vacation down to the carolina's and may be when I get back I think I will shoot up to PA,let see if we get togther to do some shooting.(HOUSE HUNTING) ::

Things are really comming together! Like Musketman says, shame to leave that factory stock empty!Keep the photos comming,I know I enjoy seeing the progress, and I'm sure most others also. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif :applause:

The butt on your original TC stock is one of the nicest I've seen. For sure, put it to some good use.

Bob: Great Photo Essay!!
That's going to be a great looking gun when you finish it up.

As for using the old stock by putting other components in it beware!! This type of activity can be habit forming.
After you finish this one, and remount the old stock you will be thinking thoughts like, "well...it would be nice to have a full stock and buying one of those 'kit' guns from Pecatonica or TOW or TVM would give me something to do.
Why, I would spend almost that much on a RC airplane which would then crash and I would have nothing! Now what did I do with that Kit Catalog?..."
Those were my exact thoughts 9 years ago. ::

don't worry guys i'm hooked....my next project is going to be a pistol in the same .50 cal flint and same no 4 grade maple stock from Pecatonica river so i have a matched set....when i'm doing the next steps on my gun pics will follow..............................bob

I see where Pecatonica has a Flintlock Kentucky Pistol kit for $246 plus $42 for Premium Curly Maple stock which includes the lock inletting. These are available in 13/16 X 11" .45 cal or 15/6 X 11" .45 or .50 cal barrels.

Sounds like fun. Just remember, building one of these pistols takes just about the same amount of work as building a full stock rifle. The only real difference is the size of the parts.

zonie whats TVM's web site....so i can look at there pistol kits......................bob

Bob: Here is TVM s site but I don't see any pistols there.
There site address was on our LINKS forum. I'm not smart enough to find it on Google without getting 460938 other hits.
http://www.avsia.com/tvm/

Just cast an eye at the 2003 Dixie catalog and they show a Pedersoli Kentucky Flintlock pistol in either .45 or .54 cal. They are priced in the $170 range if your interested.
I built one in .45 years ago and it seemed to be pretty nice. Of course it doesn't have one thing which means something to me, that being it isn't entirely made in the USA like the expensive kit guns are.

Bob,.......I probably missed it on the original thread, but what type of stain ( water/oil base)did you settle on. With two coats thus far,I assume that that you went with the water/alcohol (maybe sharing the brand/technique used?).

In any event, beautiful wood and Great Job you've done on your project! I have enjoyed following your progress and super photos.

Thanks!.....Primer

i picked up a small 8 oz. can of minwax gel stain #605 mahogany....as soon as the 3rd coat dries i'll be starting the oil finish....it has the color i'm looking for right now....all i did to put it on was sand the stock with some fine paper and using a white wash cloth dipped it in the stain on a small plastic plate so i don't contaminate the can of stain....and rubbed it in untill all streaks were gone....waited till dry and fine sanded it between coats so far....a couple of days i will be starting the oil....then assemble the gun and get out some finished pics for ya all..........................bob

well i'm up to finishing the hardware....i've reblued the metal parts so they are a blotchy blue gray look....the brass has the patina look to it now i'm looking for....it came out with the dark brown case colored look with some streaks of blue mixed in with the brown....and the stock is just drying to between coats of oil....i'm appilying the oil with a wet sanding paper of 400 grit....other then that i hope to have the finished pics in about a week or so....i'd have some pics now but they won't look any different from the last pics i posted....so i guess ya all are going to just have to wait till then, sorry.........................................bob

musketman....i'm thinking of doing a squirrel rifle....where can i get a drop in barrel for my 15/16" T/C stock?....or am i going to have to build one...."SWAT"....damn building bug....:haha:....well let me know if there's such a beast....and i'm just about done with my stock....3 coats of oil so far....i'm using 0000 steel wool soaked with oil and it's working real nice so far....instead of sand paper........................bob

Green Mt. makes drop in barrels in small calibers but small calibers in 15/16" barrels are heavy, especially .32 and .36. :winking:

i don't mind the weight....makes for better accu....i found some in .36 at TOW....i was also thinking of a .54 in 1/70" 32"....so i can switch them out when i feel like it untill i can get some more stocks outfitted...............bob

sorry for not posting anything about my progress....been sick for about 2 1/2 weeks....i'm just now getting back to it....pics to follow shortly.....................bob

well guys i'm all done with my new stock now....i'm going to get some good pics in the sunlight tomorrow mourning so stop back and look....i also have my old T/C stock sanded down to the wood and 2 coats of oil on it also....just have to wait to get my .40 GM barrel for small game hunting and the hard ware to finish it off.....................bob
