I feel like a pilg for asking this but does anybody know of a pattern that Mark Baker used for his wool hat in the pilgrams books.
The old lady loves it and I want to sew her one up for her birthday

I corresponded with Mr. Baker and here is his explanation...

The hat is a fur felt blank from Smoke and Fire. The inside hat liner is linen and hand-sewn by me. The band is a linen strip, dyed black and also sewn on the hat by me. The grease and dirt are from living in the hat.
But, in keeping with the 18th century fashion, I shellacked the hat and formed it to shape before I donned it the first time out in the woods. But, after a few snowstorms and rain showers and repeatedly using it to fan embers in a dying campfire, it has taken on the shape of what some call a "Hoss" style. That is not on purpose, but as a result of real living."[/color]

I hope that will help you

That link goe to the new flopped hat Mark is sporting in some of the recient photos.

I think these fellows want the link to the pattern of the wool soft cap that turns down to cover the ears. It is actually a workmans cap made from wool.

We did this one in association to the Come On Fellows thread that s still active. The pattern is in Pilgrim's Journey and Tidings from the 18th Century.

Measure around the head and cut a strip of wool that length and 1" more x 8" tall.

Devide the strip into six or eight sections and cut a series of Vees along one side.
_______
VVVVVVV

Sew the openings of the series of vees together, this will form a dome. Adjust the main seam for head size and sew. Turn the hat inside out and fold up the sides.

I line mine with flannel to prevent wool itch.

This is all adaptable to your size, taste and needs.

There were also military fatigue hats that were made from two triangle shaped pieces of fabric sewn together and reminiscent of a Santa Claus hat/liberty hat! Making one of those without the long peaked tail (like a cloth envlope) works well too. I have seen drawings of eatly 19th century Scots wearing these.

The hat your talking about is of Northern European design, Scandinavia or Germany Maybe Holland. I have seen it in old paintings but can find links to the ones I'm thinking of. Hope this will get you started in the right direction.
