Has anybody ever used this for long term storage inside and out on there muzzleloader? It seems fairly inexpensive at my local Walmart.

If you want to coat your muzzleloader with a mixture of 74 percent mineral oil, 25 percent paint thinner and 1 percent lard, have at it.

At least, that's what the Wickipedia article says Mystery Oil is made of.

I guess they overlooked the red dye. :hmm:

I can't say I've tried it in anything let alone on my muzzleloaders so I should be silent.

I think you'll find that "Gun Oil",, stuff made for protecting guns inside and out is inexpensive at walmart too, :idunno:

I get this by the gallon and use it as an additive in my tractor (old leaded gas tractor burning unleaded 10% ethanol blend). Also as an additive to my two-strokes - 1 oz./gallon in addition to the two-stroke oil.

As a general lube it is good. Maybe as a wipe-down protectant.

As a long-term storage - there are better choices.

Save the Marvel Mystery Oil for your hooptie.

The best bore and metal protectant you can get is Birchwood Casey's Barricade - used to be called Sheath.

For long term, greases like cosmoline and RIG are the gold standard. The most convenient way to achieve that is LPS-3. It sprays on like oil and dries like tacky wax. Never had a speck of rust with LPS-3. Some Ace Hardware store carry it.

Oils can run off and dry out. Grease will not.

MMO is oil. Nothing wrong with oil when oil is appropriate. It smells like pepermint, why? Is red, OK??? I bought some once, the is nothing outstanding about it. For oil I tend to use synthetic 2-stroke oil since I have it on hand.

Just went out to get a new can of LPS-3. They wanted $20 for an 11 oz spray can at ACE hardware. I will never buy LPS again.

Midway sells cosmoline, get the real deal, a tub will last a life time.

long term storage

If we properly define what that means we can better solve it......

A properly stored gun needs very little in the way of protection.

Prevention is worth a gallon of any miracle gun oil.

I used it in my Senco air-nailer it ruined the seals. Tossed the bottle and haven't bought any since.

I know this has nothing to do with muzzleloading but if it ruined one gun I wouldn't use it on another of any kind.
