The matchlocks used at my club give very high scores competing directly with flintlocks. They are snap-matchlocks and show fast locktime.

How do you do that? I can't find match cord that lights gunpowder reliably. I dip the glowing end in to a pile of powder, stir it about, lift it out with powder stuck to it and wait for the stuck on grains to go fizz.

I find pictures like yours most depressing :(

Brave Sir Robin, yours is the traditional sentiment but many modern snaplock shooters, at least, generally claim that a spring smooshing the coal into the pan gives them reliable and instantaneous ignition. I personally am professionaly skeptical and shall continue to reserve judgment on this.

We matchlock shooters have all had that magic pan of 4f that would not ignite if you dropped a thermite grenade into it... until it can singe your eyebrows. How do it know!?

Squire Robin if you want I can put you in touch with the gentleman here in Australia. He speaks your lingua franca anyway. :stir:

Is it a secret? Ancient texts, black arts, closed doors, dressing up and funny handshakes?

How exciting

Well, I am in PNG working, and all I can do is facilitate emails until I return home. Funny handshakes - are they what happen after the powder flask goes off while loading a matchlock?
