Maxi Ball and Maxi Hunter Loads

I have a .50 T/C New Englander and I have 370gr Maxi Balls and 350 gr Maxi Hunters. I am using Pyrodex RS. I am looking for some loading data for these combos. I have already had some help from some people in the hunting forum. Also, I thought I read somewhere that sometimes something needs to be put between the bullet and the powder. If that is so, when is it needed and why? Thank you for your help.

TC's load data lists 70/80/90/100grns FFg (ie: Purodex RS) for both.

And My experience has been that an OxYoke prelubed wad over the powder improves accuracy

Need to know the caliber before any of us can really advise you, but one place to start is using the same volume in grains as your caliber and working up from there in 5 gr increments. Of course you have to spend time at the range, but dang!
My .50 likes 60 gr 2f pushing a 250 gr conical. This load drops deer in their tracks. When I load roundballs, it likes 55 gr 3f. This load also drops deer very quickly. Your results will vary.
I use wonderwads when hunting since I'll have the gun charged all day. This is mostly to keep the lube from migrating to the powder, and the accuracy is the same.

Sometimes. It depends on your individual rifle. I have a barrel that doesn't care if it has a wad or not. Whereas others have had just the opposite experience. If you don't have any try it without to see where the accuracy is at. If your not satisfied with the accuracy then try them out to see if accuracy improves.

90 gr. of RS behind a 350 Gr. Maxi Hunter works well in my T/C Greyhawk .50 (stainless New Englander). As I recall, a Wonderwad between the bullet and the powder tightened the group a bit.

For what it is worth Mark I find maxi-balls to be more accurate and I bet you will find 80-90g of powder to be all you need. I would work up a load and see how you are doing before spending the money on the wadds.

I use heavy card stock and punch my own.......my 100 yard groups shrank in half! [Maxi balls] My groups went from 3-4" to under 1 1/2"s :grin:

How does your DP Scout works with maxis?

I've not had a chance to work up a load on the Pedersoli. Been spending most of my effort breaking in the Underhammer. The Underhammer doesn't seem to care if the maxi's have a wad or not. To make things even for complicated, I've got a brand new GM .45 1:30" or was it 1:28" barrel I haven't shot yet.

In regards to the David Pedersoli, it is in 1:48" and has been average in its accuracy. I will try and develop a maxi load for it when the weather gets better.

The big issue for me with any cast bullet I make is consistant weights for the bullet. As other bullet casters may know, the bullet weights don't all come out the same. So it's a matter of sorting the different weights out and testing which one works for any given charge. A very long process.

I have this saved on Drafts:

I shoot Hornady 410s with a MMP SUB-BASE, I also shoot a 370 Grain Maxi with
a card wad under the bullet!

Note: I did make a cutter and open up the Diameters of my Maxi mold. top to bottom-.512-.506-.500.

My groups went from 3-4" at 100yds down to 1 1/2 and smaller just by using
the sub-base, or a card wad under the bullets. My loads are Goex, 90FF to
115FF, out of my .50 cal. Underhammer with a 1 in 30 twist DeHaas Barrel.

Some of the more expensive " Veggie" wads are made from:

Vegetable fiber gasket material engineered to resist high heat & compression
and water resistant.

Or you can make your own with some heavy card stock and a Gasget [Arch]
punch.

I had tried several suppliers recently to order wads and they were all out, but the Possible Shop has them and I did get a bag of pre-lubed ox-yoke wads from them last week for my 54's.

If you want to try veg. fiber wads, Cabelas carries them. They sort of look like cork board.
