I have a T/C .54 caliber New Englander that I shoot both round ball and maxies from. I am currently using 90 grains of Pyrodex behind both and get mixed results. I want to take it back to the range and very the loads a bit to see what kind of results I can get. This gun will shoot up to 120 grains, but I'm thinking maybe 90 is too much? Can anyone else here that shoots a Renegade or New Englander give me some ideas to their best loads with maxis and round balls?
Can't remember if I have the 300 or 380 grain bullet. :cursing:
Thanks

I seem to always find the best load for accuracy in my T/Cs was between 80 to 90 grains of 2F Goex with a regular 370 gr maxi-ball in my .50 cals. Trybacking down and working up.

When I had my 54 NE I loaded 80 grains goex 3F and a wad under the REAL 380 grain conical with excellent results

The photo is of the Lee REAL 380 grain bullet, which has three grease grooves. The 300 grain version has two grooves.

My load for the 380 is 100 grn Pyro RS, while the 300 does better with 80 grn. Neither really settles down and shoots consistently without a greased felt wad between the bullet and powder- Mine are lubed with WL.

I've got a renegade 54 but the barrel is a 1-28 GM, It likes 90 gr Goex FFg covered with a wonder wad with a 425 gr Hornaday conical .

Those black powder substitute burn hotter, guys, and will burn the bottom of the bullet, and gas cut the sides of the bullet, destroying accuracy. Protect the base of the bullet, ALWAYS, with a lubed wad, or patch. Here is another testament to that wisdom.

w/ a round ball I shoot 80 grns of FFg in my .54 Renegade. W/ 360 and 430 conicals [Maxi Hunter] I use 120 grns.
