Maxi-Hunter Molds

Does anyone know where to get molds for the 275 gr T/C Maxi-Hunter or similar bullets?

I usually look for my Maxi-ball moulds on Ebay. I haven't seen a maxi-hunter mould yet.

A .54 Maxi-Hunter mold just went on Ebay for over $70.
I've been trying to get my hands on one for three years.
Hopefully someday I'll stumble upon one for a price I can afford.

They did make them. I have only seen them on Ebay and they sell for big bucks. I've only seen three in that many years.

I am on a quest to get my hands on one for less than $50.

Maxi-Ball moulds are still in production by Lyman and the original T/C models are still easy to find.

Maybe if T/C knew the demand for the hunter mould they'd make another run of them.

Can anyone tell me how they compare to one another on an animal? Will the hunter expand more? I know the Maxi-ball pokes nice hole through and through on the animals I've used them on. :thumbsup:

From what I recall the Maxi-ball is pointed. The other is not.

The Maxi-Ball is pointed with wider grease grooves.

The Maxi-Hunter has a rounded, hollow point nose with more and narrower grease grooves.

The Maxi-Ball is designed for deep penetration while the Maxi-Hunter is designed for rapid expansion.

What size of groups at 100 yards are you getting with those 350 grain .50 TC maxi-hunters. I like that conical but never could get them to group in my 1/28 twist barrels; never tried them in my 1/66 twisters. Are you shooting them in a 1/48 twist? Give me some details on your loads and rifles if you have good luck with them.

I bought one a few years back for 25.00. Hard to find now. Mine is a .50 that I shot in a TC Hawken flinter for deer hunting. The maxi-balls were going tru too quick on deer size game and TC came out with the hunter. Killed 7 deer with them, did a good job. I used 100grs 2ff and max-lube. Mine is not for sale. Not sure where you might get one. Good bullet for deer. Dilly

The maxi-hunters do a real number on deer sized game at reasonable distances. I took a doe at thirty yards last year with a 275 gr, .50 cal maxi-hunter and the exit hole was easily twice the size of the entrance. She didn't run very far.

since I am shooting soon and casting season is upon us in northern climates I was wondering if there is a similar round to a maxi hunter in a lyman mould or how does a REAL bullet do? I saw on midway that SAECO makes custom moulds can they duplicate this mould?

There's nothing similar to the Maxi-Hunter as far as I know.
REAL's are good if your rifle likes them. They are the hardest bullet to get to shoot I have ever tried.
I doubt anyone will duplicate a Maxi-Hunter mould but you have to get your hands on one first to get the specs. So, since you already have one, you don't need one made.

The only conical bullet that my Traditions Buckskinner .50, with a 1 and 20 twist patterns well is the Lee REAL conical bullet-that I cast myself. It also is easy to load in that gun as it centers itself in the loading process. I have shot 4 deer with Maxi Balls; but I have a terrible time getting them centered in the muzzle of that Traditions Buckskinner. The Maxi Balls which I have used(and cast myself, also) center well in TC guns that have the QLA system and they have mushroomed well and devastated the 4 deer which I have taken with that bullet. The REAL conical looks very similar to the TC Maxi Hunter; but I have not hunted with it yet. I plan to this year as conicals are good for situations where I have both a deer tag and an elk tag. If I have just a deer tag I shoot a roundball in my .50 Lyman Deerstalker flint. :grin:
