Warren Angus Ferris said some of the French members of his mountain man outfit would cook up some dumplings for Sunday dinner and that they were pretty good. meat, probably buff, was cut up in cubes, mixed with fat, and covered with a dough that was then fried in lard. Anyone ever try this? Any good?
 
not with cubed meat, I have made 'em with loose venison sausage wrapped with pie shell dough. use a large drinking glass to cut circles of dough, place a teaspoon of meat in center then fold over and press edges together. then fry. good, I love 'em.
