We are now about 3 weeks away from the National Shoot at Friendship, and I wish I had posted this a few weeks earlier. I operate the Running Boar range at Friendship, right next to Woods Walk. I've tinkered with a Muzzleloading Forum event at Running Boar in the past, but never really put it together very well.
I've now fleshed it out but want some member input on a detail or two.

Any member who shoots a match at Running Boar will be entered in the member event IN ADDITION TO and at no extra cost to the regular scoring of the match for NMLRA purposes. Whosoever shoots the highest score in any Running Boar match will win the traveling trophy I bought this year just for this contest. What is this traveling trophy, you ask?
How about a 9" tall German made beer stein with a metal lid, embellished with a boar hunting scene from a German opera? The scene shows a hapless hunter having missed his shot and winding up riding backwards atop the huge boar, hanging onto piggy's tail for dear life. The scroll reads something like "Through the forest, through the meadow, I wandered along with an easy mind". (Big danke schon to Tecum-tha for his help translating!)

Here's where I need your help: Should I limit this to the opening Weekend of the shoot, and award the stein to the first ever winner on Sunday, or should I run the event the entire week, and pick up the cost of shipping it to the winner after the shoot? I see benefits and drawbacks to both methods. Please let me know your thoughts.

I don't belong to any photo sharing sites, but if someone does, I could send them a couple pictures of the stein, to post in this thread.

If you're looking to draw more forum shooters, run the event for the week, ask for $1.00 one time donation for mailing to winner, or if winner is around on sun, take a picture and hand it to him at woodswalk ceremonies.

If the stars line up I plan to stop by and sling a little lead at those bores this year myself. You will recognize me when the smoke clear I will be the one those bores are laughing at :haha:

We are now only 1 week out from the National Shoot, and I'll be setting up the range tomorrow.
I've decided that since I'll be there, I'll run the event all week long, and mail the stein to the winner if he or she isn't there at the end of the week.

Please come and give it a whirl. You'll have fun, I'll get to meet more Forum members, and somebody will win bragging rights to a nice traveling trophy!

I agree run it for the whole week. My son and I will be up there to see you as we have in the past.

I would like to offer up the following: this goes for the woods walk and the boar shoot. I hope I do NOT win either. I don't want the hassle of having to get the trophy back to the shoot for the next year or breaking it.

I would much rather pay a few bucks and having the prize being kept by the winner with a new prize the next year. This is certainly not to be a poke at the very gracious contributions of those that have provided the trophys

Well, my contest ended a week and a half ago. And the winner was (drum roll please)....Master Blaster, John Monte! The man really knows how to shoot.

The turn out for the contest was rather anemic, but I understand the Woods Walk turn out was lower than usual as well. And almost every day of the shoot was either blazing hot or pouring rain, or both. And Running Boar still had it's busiest shoot ever, even though rain shortened it by a day.

Nonetheless, I've decided I'm not going to keep trying to replicate the success of the forum's woodswalk. I'll get the stein to John, but will not be making it a traveling trophy.

Congrat John :hatsoff: I wanted to come by and shoot this year but the heat and my old back said no :shake: after the woods walk I was just ready to sit down and cool off before the drive back home. Maybe next year :idunno:

Smo .... sorry the back was a problem, u said it was bothersome at woodswalk, my leg was swollen all week, guess this is what we deal with as time goes on! Trent and the girls work hard in the heat for us to have fun,a big thank you to them! :hatsoff:

Like the old saying goes. If I had of known I was going to live this long I would have taken better care of myself Of course taking a fall at 50 years old and fracturing two vertabres didn't help me any :shake: Congrats again on another win :hatsoff: Did you hear what the high score was on the woods walk this Spring?
