Now this is probably a stupid question.....
Military firearms switched to metal ramrods(by and large) in the mid-18th century.....Civilian ones still use wooden ones for another hundred years...why?

Never thought of that....Most sources just accept them as a step forward...suppose military use has different priorities.

I would guess.. in a batle u cant afford a broken one, civi can go down to the local gun shop, wood shop, furniture maker and probably a whole host of people looking for some wood dowl. that u cant get redily on the frontlines.
