Does anybody have a good understanding of Michigan's restrictions on ordering muzzleloaders online or through a catalog? I'm planning to buy a Lyman GPR, and most of the sites say Michigan residents should check your state/local laws before ordering. I talked to the state police today and they had no idea what I was talking about.

I did a search for the answer, but couldn't find any specific information about Michigan.

I'd sure appreciate any information anyone could pass along. I really want that GPR, but don't want any legal trouble.

:thanks:

John

I have a friend with an FFL and he deals in muzzleloaders some. I'll ask him and give you an answer, but probably won't be until Monday. You might check with your local county prosecutor's office. graybeard

As I understand it, MI is a state that requires a "face to face" purchase to prevent straw buyers. When I ordered my trade musket from Cabela's last fall, they sent me a piece of paper that I had to fill out and have notarized (to prove it was me buying the gun, for me). I sent that back with the money order and they shipped the gun directly to me.

I talked to the state police today and they had no idea what I was talking about

That doesn't surprise me one bit....ask the DNR, State police, and your local sherriff the same firearm related question, and you are likely to get 3 completely different answers. :shake: They say that ignorance of the law is no excuse, but how can it not be when even the law enforcement agencies are unclear of the laws? :(

This restriction notice is placed there for muzzleloading pistols and revolvers as they are supposed to be registered the same as a cartridge hand gun.

Deaddawg's got it right, long guns are not an issue, they are considered antiques ( except inlines) but some places might require a signature and copy of drivers license. Buying a kit though is no problem as it is considered parts, and not a long gun. Hey where bouts you at in thiss fine state, are you a yooper or a troll  one who lives under the bridge. Bill

I have ordered both long guns and pistols from out of state and had no problems. My last one was the pistol which I got from Loyalist Arms. I went to city hall to register it with the police and they told me that I should have gotten a permit to purchase first. However, when it was sent, it was sent with the lock in one box and the stock and barrel in another, so it was really gun parts not a whole gun, so no permit was required. About a month after I got it the law was changed so that black powder pistols do not need to be registered anymore.
I guess what I am trying to say is that I have had no problems ordering black powder guns on line from outside of Michigan.

Thanks everyone for all the great input. Based on everything I've read, I thought it only affected pistols, but I couldn't be sure.

Graybeard, thanks for asking your FFL the question. I'm looking forward to hearing his take on things.

Bill, I'm as far under the bridge as you can get. Lambertville, SE corner about 2 miles from OH. My mom and dad live up your way in Acme, and fortunately, they don't mind a lot of extra visits during hunting season!

Thanks again to everyone,

John

John Z: My buddy who is an FFL gun dealer says you can have a sidelock, long black powder gun shipped direct to your home, no problem, in Michigan. Handguns are different. Hope this helps. graybeard

greybeard,

Thanks a bunch for the information. I really appreciate you taking the time to help me out.

I just ordered the GPR from Midsouth!

John

"Muzzleloading Deer Seasons
During the December muzzleloading seasons, muzzleloading deer hunters can use only a muzzleloading rifle or muzzleloading shotgun or black power handgun loaded with black powder or a commercially manufactured black powder substitute."

This is off the MI dnr site, not much.......
