realy thinking on getting a ship carbine for middle sex. is this a good gun? thinking of getting it for trade gun comp and maybe use it for small game with shot loads.

Just looking at the picture it seems like a fine small game gun but any flintlock gun is only as good as the lock and I know nothing about the quality of their locks. :idunno:

And Here we go...
NO

I don't think the guns themselves are inherently flawed. Honestly I think the companies that sell them here in the U.S should be taking more care in their finishing of the raw product when they receive it from India.
Think about it, the majority of the complaints I hear about Indian-made guns is problems with lock function and the finish of the stock and that's the business of the retailers to see to. The U.S and Canadian retailers should be taking more responsibility on their end, although I do understand that their main clientele are reenactors who don't seem to regard quality of their arms very high for some reason. And their mentality effectively lowers the quality of the product for the rest of us.
It's like buying a bicycle from Wall-mart. There's nothing wrong with the bike, but you wouldn't trust the Wall-mart employee who assembled it.

I would really want to talk to someone who owns one and shot it a bit.

The problem with inexpensive guns is usually poor lock quality, heavy barrels wieght and poor fit and finish. Poor flintlock quality is a real pain.

All guns look good in the sales flyers.

If it is "for show" and a couple of rounds for the public, it might be okay. If it is your "go to" gun you might want to pass.

I'm actually looking at the Ketland or Fusil de Chasse and since MVTC is a 2 hr drive from me I'm going down there this week to get a hands on look at them. They also offer an afternoon to teach you about, let you shoot, and clean your new gun. Those that have or have had India guns say they are not a bad gun. Those that say they are "junk" haven't said that they actually had one :hmm: . I think this is one of those times we'll just have to find out ourselves. I'll send you a PT with my opinion of them (for what it's worth)as I am a beginner with flinters and don't have alot of money to spend on one. :2

I have owned three of their guns over the years and they are junk! One barrel was so off center I had a liner put in it. I worked the stock down, after this the lock stopped working. I could have bought a Pedersoli for what I had to put in it.
A second musket had an internal taper in the barrel making it impossible to shoot round ball.
I got one of their double barrel flint shotguns, the barrels were fine but I had to replace the locks. I have another Friend who had to do the same thing with his. I do know one man who is happy with the locks on his Middlesex flintlock shotgun. I have handled two other muskets with the same barrel problems. In my opinion, if you want to shoot and hit anything, these guns are junk. If you want an expensive kit, expensive for
having to re work the stock and replace major parts, you might like one of their guns.

Dear VTFlinter,
I hope you will post your opinions. As to the original question-
I suggest Loyalist Arms and repairs. I have had a few of theirs (and one now) and love them. The finish was as good as a lyman.
David

is'nt loylist arms also have india guns? by looking at them they look like the same guns! only you have to drill out the touch hole or install a linner in it. I have shot one of there dog lock pistols shot realy well. but yes I'm on a shoe string bougt... so I can't aford a realy nice custom from tvm or tracks.

Keep watching the classifieds. I just saw a club butt on another forum go for 400.00. There are 2 on the first page of the classifieds on this forum for 650 and 625. Both are custom guns. just for perspective 625.00 will hardly buy the parts. Haven't we outsourced enough to india. I expect to deal with them to fix my computer but I don't want them any where near my guns.So save a few more sheckles and help a local builder.

There is a nice Canoe gun made by Gregg Christian in the classified at the moment for a little over $600. Greg made my poor boy and he does great work. I would look at that one hard!! Just trying to help. Robbie

I notice heavy polishing washes away any angles on the furnture and way too much wood left on the stock as well.

I've owned a several Indian made guns over the years, starting with a percussion double 12 gauge and a percussion single 12 when Navy Arms was importing them back in the 70's. Both were copies of British guns and they had nice lines and proportions but the quality of wood and workmanship were in no way comparable to British quality. I had to do quite a bit of tinkering to get trigger pulls within reason but what can one expect for the price?
I now have an Indian made single 12 gauge which is not a terrible looking gun but it did have the tapered bore as mentioned by grzrob. It was larger at both ends and tapered smaller in the middle. I pulled the breechplug and reamed it from the breech end with a common adjustable reamer with a steel tubing extension. Reamed until I had a uniform diameter from breech to within about two inches from the muzzle to leave a bit of choke. I then polished it with a lead lap and fine lapping compound and it now smokes clay birds like a full choke trap gun.
I bought that gun only because Middlesex was closing them out for half price and that was about a fair price. Had I not been willing and able to do some pretty serious work on it I think it would have been over priced at that.
