I just chuck mine in a drill and run through an ordinary threading die one fractional size smaller than the rod. Push and pull to "wear" the threads off the rod and make it smooth. Repeat with next smaller size if necessary. Finish and taper with sandpaper.

Thanks for that info, that process looks like it produces a nice rod, appreciate it.
