In using a mill to cut a barrel channel, you would be limited to shorter barrels. Most full size mills have a X axis (horizontal axis} movement of 36 in. or less. There are some made with longer X axis table movement but they are very expensive. In addition, I think the spindle speed of a mill isn't high enough to cut wood well and the risk of chipout would be high. Routers, the power tool used for cutting channels, have a much higher RPM than mills.
