Disappointing...

First reaction was "great"...the article started with a full page color photo of a hunter firing a Flintlock...but unfortunately the text went downhill after that, using worn out old phrases like "flinch-lock", unreliable in bad weather, etc, etc...worked on through caplocks to the 200 yard dream rifles of today which let us humanely take game at 200yds while still enjoying the traditional feel and special muzzleloader seasons.

Said 777 and American Pioneer pellets "don't stink, foul, or rust a gun".

Showed a photo of a TC Maxi-Hunter but referred to it in the text as a Maxi-Ball.

Disappointing...

Unfortunately, I'd call it par for the course.

The name of the game is selling guns for the biggest advertisers.

I doubt Wallace Gussler advertises with Field and Stream.

That's why I quit reading the gun rags.

RB,
I couldn't agree more, I like field and stream even though it has it's many faults. It seems every year they do a article on Muzzleloading and the driving force behind it is the advancements in weapons history from it's meager past. I sincerely wish that someone, more versed in the English language, would write and submit an article on traditional blackpowder weapons. They're always doing articles on catching sharks from a kayak, bait from a beer can, and what to do if attacked by a cougar.... wonder if they would do an article on the crazy idea of taking a deer with a flintlock..... shutter.

that will be the day that happens....don't ya know that ya can't take a whitetail with a flintlock and round ball :rotf: ....sorry i had too...........bob

I stopped reading all of those rags years ago. Way back yonder the stories were written by folks who lived the life. Now (and for many years now) they are written by people who are WRITERS not livers of the truth. :( :(

Crackstock,

You beat me to it! If I had the experience level of folks on this forum, I would give it a try. I don't, so I would just sound like some slackjawed flatlander trying to write an article...

I think I won a subscription to both Field & Stream and Outdoor Life, because they both started arrivin' in my mailbox, and I sure didn't order 'em. :shake: The glossy papers bound up in book format are hard to burn. I'm cheatin' with a cup of diesel fuel. :rotf:

Hmmmmmmm
Seems as though many of you haven't read Backwoodsman Magazine.
While it isn't devoted entirely to muzzle loading, they do have muzzle loading related articles pretty often.
There's tons of articles about knives, hunting, making your own gear and general woodcraft.

If you aren't familiar, I suggest you all check it out as it is a great magazine

I agree about The Backwoodsman Magazine. My friend gave me two back issues and I could not put them down. Not only did it have fantastic muzzleloading articles, but it had gunsmithing tips for military weapons, knifemaking tips, leatherwork, and true hunting stories. No fluff about a hunting trip to some foreign destination that most could only dream about. All hands-on knowledge from actual people who know first-hand.Check an issue out if you can find one on a newsstand. I have not seen it around my area, but I have a subscription coming soon.

Don't know why they would even bother with an article like that. I see it quite a bit in other magazines as well. Face it, most people are into quick and easy, and just love articles like that. flinch

I may pick up a copy of the Backwoodsman, if I ever see on, but as far as the rest of them no way. I used to get Peaterson's hunting, but after Jim Shockys article saying traditional rifles were not good enough for hunting. Not one mag has found it's way home since.

Brasilkit, I discovered it about a year ago...it quickly passed Muzzleloader as my favorite mag...and Muzzleloader had long before passed MuzzleBlast....Hank

The Backwoodsman is my favorite magazine, and the only one that I subscribe to. It lacks the glitz and the pomp of the "Field&Streams" and the "Outdoor Lifes" and that is fine with me. I have managed to find every back issue back to 2000, and there is a virtual treasure trove of info contained in those magazines. I'll bet most of the posters on this forum would enjoy it! No I am not employed by Backwoodsman Magazine!

Crackstock
I think you have to be in "the clique" to get an artical published in most of those mags. Most have staff writers and don't accept submissions from the general public. It is also possible that if you did get one published, by the time they get done editing it it would be incorherent or you would look like something from the Pleistocene Era.
What is amazing about such writers is they can't fanthom that with a little work and time with a traditional rifle, be it a flintlock or a percussion, that they will shoot accurately and reliably. Yet they wouldn't think of slapping on any old scope on their new hot rod 6mm PPC and entering a match without tuning and sighting it in.
It has been said many times that muzzle loading today is driven by money and the money comes from the shooters and makers who are "ignition challenged".

Sorry, didn't mean for this to turn into a rant. I'm not totally against those other muzzle loader shooters. Anyone who is shooting anything is a good thing.
I would love to see a good artical on traditional muzzle loader shooting and hunting by someone who knows what they are doing. I'd bet it would boost the interest in traditional rifles.

Regards, Dave

It was a rather sad piece by our standards. However, they did cover flintlock and caplock. Maybe, just maybe a few folks will read it and try out a flinter or capper. But with the price they listed for the T/C Hawken I don't know if they'll get many sales.
IMO, any advertisement of our sport is good as long as it includes traditional firearms.

I used to subscribe to F&S years ago then I discovered Penthouse.......Er....uh.....I mean...Backwoodsman magazine.Iget Backwoodsman every other month and I love it.My only gripe is I read through it too fast, just can't put it down.

Fellow Buckskinners,

Being in the military I miss alot of hunting seasons. So I get my fix by watching hunting videos. Though they r good they r missing something. I for one, would like to see, just once, someone shooting a flintlock or even a caplock on these videos. Lord forbid someone does a hunt in some kind of period dress. Just rabbling but maybe food for thought for someone out there with means. Thanks for listening.

I have one video with Roger Raglin (spelling) and all of his hunts are with a percussion sidelock.
The video is called Blackpowder Magic and I see it on Ebay from time to time.
