Modifying a barrel

I recently acquired a DGW 1/2 scale carronade with a ring from the cascable to the button. I'm considering cutting it off but I'm not sure what that will do to the integrity of the barrel. Do any of you have experience modifying a barrel or should I just leave the ring in place? Thanks!

That's an inherent part of the barrel. Carronades being ship guns, the ring made it easier to secure and hoist to and from the deck. I don't know about the structural integrity, though I'd imagine it's not good for it, but I'd hate to cut off one of the distinguishing features of the gun.

BTW, I find that the eye on mine makes it easier for me to carry.

The Breech rope passes through that loop and controls recoil so the gun doesn't recoil across the ships deck

Thanks for the input. I tracked down an engineer locally and was told that it could hurt because the ring was cast on the barrel. My other cannon is a field gun so I hadn't encountered a ring before. Now I just have to start hunting wood and brass to mount it.
