Hi just wondering what I could make out of my moose hide if I get one down. Any ideas on different projects. Would that be too thick for a leather scabbard .

I have two pieces from a friends moose he took a few years ago. I'm planning to make a shot bag with one piece. Not sure about what I'll do with the other one. Like Black Hand said, I've heard moose makes great moccasins but I have not made them. Good luck on your hunt!

I've never used it, so I can't comment from direct experience. As far as a scabbard, I don't see why not, but as to a bag, I'd think it might be a bit on the thick side... but I guess it would depend on where you took the parts from on the hide.

:hmm:

good luck with your hunt, and let us know how things turn out!

Might reflect the particular tanning method, but all I've handled has been very soft like elk or deer, but also very thick. Gonna be neat stuff for some uses, pretty impractical for others.

How soft? Bud of mine had a whole hide from a big bull tanned, then couldn't bring himself to cut it up for projects. Got tired of tripping over it, so tossed it over their sofa as a "throw." About the best thing I've ever seen on a sofa, and soft as butter so really comfortable.

i have 2 bags made from moose and just bought another hide that is 16 1/2 sq. all of mine has been 5-6 oz. very nice, soft leather. i really like it for bags.

blackpowder62, now you have me curious ... somehow I got the impression that the thickness of moose hide would make it too stiff for bags, but your experience shows that this isn't the case ... do I conclude correctly that (since it's used for moccasins) that it is pretty durable?

looking for a winter project ... the last veg. tan bag I made was a bit on the stiff side ... perhaps moose is the way to go ... hmmm ...

I made moccasins/shoe pacs from commercial moose hide and they have been good ones. The leather was thick but flexible, wasn't difficult to work with, and has held up well.

My hide would have been a bit thick for a shooting bag, at least the type I like. I have a bag of moose which I acquired years ago from a friend, but have never used it. You can see the thickness and softness of the leather. The inside of the bag was coated everywhere with hide glue, apparently in an effort to stiffen the leather? It's a reasonable bag.

My rifle bag is moose hide. Not sure what weight; but it's thick yet very supple. It may also be a split. Being fully lined I can't tell.

I think the method of tanning has something to do with the stiffness.

5-6 oz., is about an 1/8" thick. the place i get mine has the grain on, so it is not splits. it is very soft and pliable, as nice as anything i have ever used or seen.
