I'm new to the forum, and caplocks in particular. I've been shooting a flinter for a couple of years, but I recently picked up a CVA .50 mountain rifle. I'm leaving to go moose hunting on the 15'th, and I was going to use my .308 like I do every year, but I've been bitten by the ML bug hard. I was thinking about using the mountain rifle instead with 90 grains of 2f 777, 365 gr gamemaster conical, and #11 cap. What do you guys think?

Redneneck I have 2 Mt rifles 45.cal I shoot round ball in them as they are 1-66 twist Have 2 cva hawkins 50&54 with 1-48 twist I shoot rb in them ,but could shoot long bullets as they are faster twist I use 80gr 2ff with deer tallow patch with rb If yours is slow twist it might not shoot the long bullets Dilly

Mine is a 1 in 48, I got a 3 shot 100 yard group of just under 3 inches the other day with this load. At 50 yards I'm was throwing 2 inch groups. I don't think I'd take a shot at a bull over 50 yards anyway though.

As far as i know, all the old CVA Mt. rifles had a 1-66" twist. If you have a 1-48" twist are you certain it is a Mt rifle and not a CVA Hawken? The Mt rifle has a 32" barrel with a German Silver patch box, and a pewter nosecap, where as the Hawken has all brass trim and a 28" barrel.

The CVA .50 cal should work ok for moose,I would use a round ball try to get with in 50 to 75 yrds be ready to load another one quickly .I am going to try and shoot one with my 24ga.trade gun next year.I was born and raised in Windsor I have lived in Alberta 25 years.TC....rusty

Yep, It's a Mountain rifle. I e-mailed CVA (now BPI) and received a message that mine has a 1 in 48, if you do a msn search, the CVA sidelock page lists Muntain rifles as having a 1 in 48 as well. The catalogue I've got for my CVA .45 Kentucky flinter that my dad built in 1976 shows the Mounain rifle's as having a 1 in 66. I'm not sure when they changed?

I not sure about the 777 though. They usually have slower ignition, if at all,in flints, don't know if cap-locks are any better?

I shoot at a friend's house in River Canard (he's got a berm at the end of his 200 yard field, or If it's raining, and I need to make some noise, General Gun and Supply has a 25 yard indoor range. I only shoot 3f Goex in my flintlock. I just picked up the 777 for my new caplock. Going to North Bay for Moose, and my parants place in Parry Sould for deer (gonna use the flinter for deer this year).
