I really hate to expose my ignorance here, but after reading many posts on making my own moose milk I have a question...
Why is it called moose milk? I have never seen a moose and have no idea if this looks like the real moose milk, or if someone actually milked a moose to get bore lube, but it makes me wonder.

Muzzleloader shooters like to give animal names to things and even themselves: Hawk, Griz, Wolf, etc..... So they decided on Moose. Then, I guess since it has a "milky" color to it, that's where they got the "milk". Giving you "Moose Milk".

refer to the first sentence in slowpokes reply, then ask stumpy :: :shocking: ::
the stuff has the consistency :shocking:and apperance of a dried lugy :shocking: :shocking:

I just get this mental picture of a really tough mountain man thinking "that moose ain't that tuff!" and sticking the end of his barrel up it's nose.

"Moose Milk" has come to be a generic term for a mix of water, alcohol and a soluable oil used as a blackpowder solvent and patch lube.

I pulled the term "Moose Snot" out of my . . .

Well, it's thicker than milk and sticks under chair seats and stuff. Beaver Goober or Weasel Lugie just didn't have the same ring.

I did my early chemistry work at Whatsamatta U.

With the holidays on us I haven't been able to start accumulating the stuff I neem to start shooting my T/C Hawken.
I will buy "off the shelf" Hornady .50 round balls and pre lubed patches to start, but I know I will end up cooking my own lube, just for fun if no other reason.
I also need to find a replacement rod and a short starter.
I did find a starter on ebay- an elk antler starter. It looks interesting.
And I need a possibles bag. I just know my wife will call it a purse.
And .50 caliber cleaning patches and jags, and a bullet puller.
I really need to find a kitt for sale. Maybe Bass Pro Shops. There's one about 15 miles away.
After a shooting session I will use hot soapy water to clean, but will it hurt to oil with Rem Oil? I know I will need to remove it before shooting again, but I have some denatured alcohol. I use it to strip oil and grease before cold bluing.

An alcohol patch before loading will do it. Also, :imo:, if you run a lubed cleaning patch down the barrel (and pop a cap or two afterwards if percussion) before loading it makes the first shot stray out of group less and the gun untimately easier to clean (and possibly require less frequent need for wiping between shots). I believe it does this by making the initial fouling layer softer as opposed to what gets laid down on a "dry" barrel.

Replacement rod? I'm on my original with a 22+ year old Renegade with the old-style impregnated wood rod, and my New Englander has a 15 year old original imp.wood rod. If you've got an unbroken one on the gun now, don't let that hold you up.

Cheaper Than Dirt has some great "get you going" possible/hunting bags. I got a Swiss canvas one for something like $4.95 that I carry my lunch & non-gun gear ("possibles") in while deer hunting.

I have the CTD store about 1.5 miles from my house. I had read many posts recommending replacing the wooden rod with either a composite or brass rod.
I also need to get a powder measure. A local gun store has the lubed patches, balls, powder and measure. I need to check a few other stores near me.
If nothing else my C&RFFL gets me dealer prices from Midway and Brownell's.

Fox- you da man!
I do know Elk Castle. I live over in Saginaw and the local shop I tried was Noble's Firearms. I'll get to the west side this week.
I can't believe it but CTD doesn't carry any bp items in their store- nada- zip.
