Quick question and need some wisdom. I use Stumpy's Moose Snot for my patch lube. Today, I cast some REAL bullets and want to try them in my .50 TC Hawken, it has a 28 inch barrel with a 1:48 twist. Do I need to just add more bees wax to thicken the lube so it will stick in the grooves of the REAl bullet? Or is there something else that will work to thicken the lube? I don't want to change the formula much, it works so well, thanks Stumpy..also any suggestions as to a powder charge to use with the REALs, they are 325 grains. You imput is appreciated. :hatsoff:

Hi Harold,
I shoot the 380 grain REAL out of my .54 T/C Hawkens. I place the REALs in the freezer for a half hour to put a chill on them. Melt some Bore Butter in a muffin pan. With a set of tweezers or needle nose, dip them in the mix. The melted butter will solidify onto the REALs. May have to dip twice for a good coating. Place them on some wax paper and let them set for a couple of hours. When you are done pour the melted butter back into the bottle till next time. Really fast and easy. Got the idea right here on this forum. With 90 grains of Pyrodex RS and a felt was, it will drive those REALs right in at 100 yards. I know mine is a .54, but it might give you an idea. Good luck and have fun shooting  .

Stumpy's Moose Snot should be thick enough to stick to the bullet as is.
The problem with the Lee REAL is the shallow grooves. The best way I have found for lubing REAL's is to coat them with Lee Liquid Alox. It prevents leading and in my experience seems to make the REAL more accurate in all of my rifles. I use a lubed felt wad underneath the REAL to help with the fouling.
I have tried many other types of lubes as well as application techniques and the Alox was the best solution for me.

I have a variation called Moose Marrow I tried for R.E.A.L. bullets. Be warned that I never got them to shoot well in my .50 and gave up. I started at 85 gains FFg and went up and down but they never shot very well. This same rifle took me YEARS to get to shoot a round ball well (and led to the development of Moose Snot in the first place) and it did settle down, so I don't blame the R.E.A.L.s

But here's the recipe and enjoy.

Stumpy’s Moose Marrow

Beeswax 3 oz.
Castor Oil 9 oz.
Murphy's Oil Soap 1 oz.
Witch Hazel 1 oz.

It does, however, make a great cylinder lube for my 1851 revolver. Lots thicker than Moose Snot.

PS - I don't use them anymore, but Maxi-Hunters were the conicals I did end up using. Now I shoot round balls exclusively . . . but my game is close-in whitetails so I don't need the range or massive impact of conicals.
