Springtime is Morel Mushroom time here in the Heartland!... What's your favorite way to fix 'em after you find 'em!

Rolled in craker crumbs and fried in butter might not be good for the heart, but it's my favorite!

Diced, sauteed in butter in cast iron skillet with fresh brook trout fillets dreged in egg wash and seasoned flour, salt & pepper to taste.

 Sautaed in butter with a salt pepper, wild onion with a couple of fresh trout on the bank of my favorite trout stream.

Horner,
Have not had them for several years now,but
the last time I did and it was always my favorite
way to use them. Fry up in butter, salt, pepper and
green onion.Sprinkle with flour then add beef or
chicken broth and make into a smooth gravy.I serve this over wild grain rice with a nice rare
strip steak.
I think the key word from all our post,
is BUTTER,there is no substitute when it comes
to morels or any other mushroom. IMHO

:v Visited the "spot" today and it seems they are peaking up through the duff. I think about 6-10 more days they are going to be picked. Just before the ticks start to get very active. I got a wee bit smarter two years back and marked the "spot" with my GPS so no longer hunting for that patch of trees. So far so go it's not been raided in the past. But you guys are making my mouth water---and you are quite correct in fact I use real creamery butter fresh from a local farm.

High tech mushroomin, what will they think of next!
All kiddin aside I could trip over em and still not find a single mushroom.

Old Pilgrim,
Check out the price of these on the
market and you might step a bit more slowly.
Dried, the last time I checked they were $10+
an ounce.Fresh the sky is the limit to fine
dinning spots. They are not to be tripped on
lightly.:nono:. Just teasing, if they were easy
to find they would not be so exspensive :hmm:

I'm a Chef and $100 a pound is a good deal. So value your secret finds and know how special they are

Well...Went out yesterday morning and found a half of a five gallon bucket full!

Guess what I had last night for supper?

All of the rain and now sunshine is really starting to pay-off guys!...Made me a Morel and wild onion omelet for breakfast...Heading back out for more later! :blah: :blah: :blah:

:v If we get some rain tomorrow I will be at the "spot" and pick my fest---you guys are just making me think of nothing else. Too bad they aren't more abundant but then that would take the romance and the flavor out of it. :hatsoff:

We put a little milk mixed in with a couple of eggs, dip the morels, then rolled in cracker crumbs and proceed as above. Also can use canola oil instead of butter (I just had a heart attack so just MIGHT have to limit my intake a bit!).

I do them about the same way, but forgot to mention the beaten egg before rolling them in the cracker crumbs!...Mazo!...TAKE CARE OF THAT HEART!

morels are scarce in these parts. I'm in WNC also. I've heard they can be found in parts of S. Calinky.

An old college Pal of mine who lives back in Southern Indiana called today. He was telling me
about his turkey and Morel hunting this spring. He
said Morels were selling for $40.00 per pound this
year. High priced "Toad Stools". :hmm:

$40.00 a pound is about what their getting for them...With other are's of the country getting more!...Seen someone selling them the other day in our local newpaper for $28.00 a pound. I think I'll just keep looking for my own,if I don't use to much gasoline in my mule to do so!

Doggone it, that's not fair! We still have a couple of weeks to go here in Wis. (when grape leaves are the size of a pig's ear). South of us in Central Illinois, some of my buddies are already pickin' 'em. They usually bring a bunch to a local rendezvous and share some. Great cameraderie , sitting around a campfire all afternoon cooking up those tasty morsels!
