Hi Gang,

I suspect we have all seen Jeremiah Johnson numerous times . . . and perhaps Charleton Heston and Brian Keith in Mountain Men (though the dialogue was disappointing and really harmed the feel of the film).
If you have Netflix there's one streaming now that I saw as a kid and hadn't seen in 30+ years. You may want to check it out.
It is called, Across the Wide Missouri, with Clark Gable. . there's a scene in it you won't forget, during Gable's fight with an Indian which was all I remembered. .
The movie is a little slow and the story is thin, but the scenery is wonderful and its about mountain men, and has a lot of accuracy and may be one of the only films with a well portrayed Rendevaux (sp?) . . though Mountain Men may have had one, but that movie was not memorable for me and disappointing. . .rough language too. . . couldn't show it to my kids. . .but we watched Gable in Across the Wide Missouri tonight.

I kind of remember the name of the movie, though I don't recall any scenes. I'll have to check it out. Sounds interesting.

You may want to pop down to the "Muzzleloading and History in the Media" forum, where we discuss different period movies, books and such.

Is that the one where he can't get loaded in time
and shoots the attacker with the ramrod????
Wulf

Shot attacker with ramrod was in The Mountain Men with Charlton Heston & Brian Keith.

We watched it and thoroughly enjoyed it. Kept wondering if the Heston / Keith movie was a semi remake.

Actually I liked the mountain man portion of the TV series Centennial better than these other movies. I got mad when I learned they cast Robert Conrad as Pasqunell ( spelling ) I had read the book and I thought Conrad could not do the part justice. I was very happy to be wrong about this.

:hmm: AS someone who is not afraid to admit he has shot his ramrod out of his rifle (by accident), don't--it kicks like a mule :rotf: when it happens and then you are without a ramrod for you will never find it. Know a deer hunter who was reloading his rifle when a deer walked up on him. He remember the scene in "Across the Wide Misssouri" and aimed at the deer with the ramrod stillin the barrel. He didn't get the deer and he lost a very good ramrod with a fancy jag. :(

well dip me in chocolate n toss me to a bunch a women, somebody else remembers 'The Trap".I often thought I was the only person who had ever watched it as nobody remembered it. I saw that movie years n years ago n always wanted a copy of it. One a the good folks here on the board found me one n now I have it on the shelf. As movies go it really isn't all that good but the scenery is amazing n what the heck I have enjoyed everything Oliver Reed has been in over the years. To bad he never got the recognition I believe he deserved as an actor. We lost a great charactor actor when he died. was kind of funny seeing him as a young woods runner after seeing him in Gladiator as an old man. I will say if ya can rent it it is a good evenings entertainment if ya don't critique it to closely. just some thoughts YMHS Birdman
