I recently acquired a brass frame 50cal. 31" barrel with the brass forearm. I was wondering if anyone knows how many were made in Olney Tx. This one is in the 65xx. Unfinished barrel as new condition. I read earlier posts about cleaning with some kind of flushing apparatus thru the nipple. Could someone please give me directions on how to build this device???

Good Evening Hos,

Nothing really to build for flushing through the nipple.

You will need a piece of 1/8" soft neoprene or similar rubber tubing about 36" or so in length.

Push one end over the nipple and tie the other end up along the barrel muzzle with a twiste or similar item.

With the rifle held in a vertical position, pour 2-3 inches of your favorite bore cleaner into the barrel and let set for about 15 minutes.

My favorite cleaner is Black-Solve.

Use a clean patch on the end of the cleaning rod. Work the rod and patch up and down the barrel to force the solvent back and forth through the nipple.

Lay the muzzle end of the rubber tubing on the ground and let the bore cleaner drain out. Clean and dry the bore. Then wipe the bore with a good bore grease or oil.

NOW, this is the quick and abbrevrated version that I have used for 40 or more years with total satisfaction.

This subject has been discussed in detail by myself and others on previous post. Do some research on the post, and you will find all of the information you want.

Best regards and good shooting,

Now you have heard from John. Sorry I have never heard of his method but guess it would work as well as any.
I get about 2 feet of weedeater fuel line at the local store and as John, put one end on the nipple and the other in a can or liter soda bottle pour my cleaner down the barrel and pump just like John does. O the can or bottle needs to have cleaner in them also and the line needs to be in the solution to work. Just tie a minnie or a washer to the line to keep it in the bottom of the soultion.
Think I'll try John's idea to compare it with mine.
Fox

Appreciate the answers - I've never had a rifle that you couldn't remove the barrel. This info will come in handy. thanks cd

Good Evening Silverfox,

With the exception of the cleaner in the bottle and possibly the Black-Solve, there appears to be little, if any, significant difference between your cleaning method and mine.

I drain my cleaner out on the ground, only because it is so dirty, that I do not want to contaminate and weaken the solution in the bottle.

Must be some of that Scot ancestral blood in me.

However, please do keep in mind that I did leave out the details.

I strongly urge you to look up the post on this subject for those details.

Best regards and good shooting,

I have a bicentenial model Iof 500 that is no 198. A 50 with the premuim maple stock and fancy buttplate. Nice rifle, but had a 30lb trigger when I got it.I got it down to 9lbs. The barrel is a little rough from from them cutting the riffling. The paper says you can shoot 125grs behind a round and not strip the rifelig, I had to move the back sight up as it was so close that a 20yr old with good eyes couldn't get a good sight picture. I only shot 60 grs in it and killed a few groundhogs with it. To heavy to hunt with as it weights 10lbs. Been in house forever. Last gun I would take out, It was made to be a wall hanger. Shame to have that good barrel and a shot gun trigger. One Co later then mine did change the way the trigger was fastened and put a scew to lighten the pull. I try to get my done this way but never got it done. I bought mine at a gun aucton . Dilly

Sorry about that trigger. I'd bet someone else would love to have it. Then you could get one with the adjustable trigger!

Using a hose was how I cleaned mine. I Soldered a peice of copper tube to a old nipple and pump flushed it, as John says. Mine don't have a brass forearm, its maple. The paper said the riflings were hand cut,so many passes on each one. They are deep . Deeper then my green mt barrel. I-60 twist, the gun would make a good one to take to shoots if it had a smooth trigger as it handles nice when shooting off hand, do to the weight and balance. Dilly

Wow, 9 pounds? You're still about 6 pounds too high :surrender: !!

Mine 50cal Mowrey sounds identical to yours but is a low 3-digit serial number in the 300s. It wears a fancy small Swiss-type Schuetzen buttplate and holds ideally for offhand shooting. It is one accurate rifle!

I use 60grs FFFg, 0.490" Hornady RBs, and Ox-Yoke 0.010" thick strip patches that are soaked in Mama Flinter's 'Moose Milk' formula, then allowed to dry. They are dipped and dried twice. Accurate, accurate, accurate and no need to swab between shots.
